The call

The IMS and Voice Core business looks solid and validated, but the balance sheet, exec churn, and lost RAN deals make the parent company's near-term footing unsteady.

Mavenir builds the core software that handles voice calls and data on phone networks. Its main strength is that this software is hard-wired into carriers' systems and takes years to swap out, but Ericsson and Nokia do similar work and are winning new deals. The company took a big rescue loan in mid-2025, lost four top leaders, and admitted it is losing to rivals, which means the real test is whether it can turn losing deals into winning ones and stop the money drain by late 2026, or whether a larger company will buy it up.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shows up as a feature carriers want bundled in, not as a rival taking Mavenir's customers. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Ericsson and Nokia. CEO has admitted Ericsson and Nokia are winning RAN deals; Mavenir already exited Open RAN hardware. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Carrier-grade IMS and Voice Core software is certified and wired into networks serving over half the world's subscribers, hard to rip out.
What would change this call
Telefonica AI Innovation Hub and Turkcell MOUs convert to binding, revenue-disclosed contracts by Q4 2026. Shows Mavenir can turn partnerships into paying business, easing financial stress.
Another layoff round or CFO Uli Dopfer departure before end of 2026. Would signal financial instability continuing despite the 2025 recapitalization.
Additional senior executive departures beyond the Jan 2026 quartet within the next year. Would indicate deeper leadership turmoil and possible investor or customer confidence loss.

Questions people ask
Is Mavenir Systems profitable in 2026?
Mavenir is private and does not disclose audited financials. In June-July 2025 it completed a recapitalization eliminating over $1.3 billion of debt and adding $300 million new financing from Siris Capital, signaling prior financial distress rather than confirmed profitability.
Who owns Mavenir Systems?
Mavenir is controlled by private equity firm Siris Capital Group, which remained controlling shareholder after a 2025 recapitalization. Koch Strategic Platforms holds a minority stake dating to a $500 million investment in 2021, per Wikipedia.
Is Mavenir losing to Ericsson and Nokia?
Yes. Mavenir's own CEO warned in September 2025 of an Ericsson-Nokia duopoly as Open RAN stalls, and the company exited manufacturing physical Open RAN radio hardware in 2025, ceding ground in that segment.
Did Mavenir have layoffs?
Yes. In April 2025 Mavenir laid off hundreds of employees in its India RAN division after failing to secure the Vodafone Idea deal and other Indian contracts, following CEO Pardeep Kohli's February 2025 confirmation that headcount fell from about 4,500 to 4,000.
Could AI replace what Mavenir does?
Unlikely to fully replace it. Mavenir's carrier-grade IMS and voice core infrastructure relies on regulatory certification and deep telco integrations that generic AI cannot replicate; instead Mavenir is embedding AI as a feature, launching an 'AI-by-design' strategy in December 2025.
Who is Mavenir's biggest competitor?
Ericsson and Nokia dominate the broader RAN and core network market; a June 2026 Juniper Research leaderboard ranks Ericsson first, Nokia second, and Huawei third, with Mavenir noted as having exited RAN hardware entirely.
