The call

The technology is embedded across dozens of chains but the treasury is shrinking, chains are leaving, and ATOM has not found a way to capture the value it helps create.

Interchain Foundation built software that lets multiple blockchains talk to each other, and about 100 to 200 blockchains use it, moving over $1 billion monthly through this bridge. However, the foundation's own ATOM token and treasury are collapsing: the token lost 97 percent of its value, the treasury dropped from $54 million to $26.4 million in two years, and key projects are leaving for other networks. Simpler alternatives like LayerZero and Wormhole are winning customers by being easier to use, while Ethereum's side chains offer the same connectivity without the complexity. The foundation's survival depends entirely on a new plan to redesign ATOM's rewards and fees scheduled for late 2026, because without it, the shrinking treasury cannot fund operations or attract developers back.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI product replaces cross-chain blockchain infrastructure directly; AI agents may route around Cosmos tooling over time. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Ethereum L2s (Arbitrum, Base, Optimism) and bridging rivals LayerZero, Wormhole, Axelar, Chainlink CCIP, Circle CCTP. Cheaper, unified bridging and L2 rollups pull liquidity and developers away from Cosmos chains and IBC. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Cosmos SDK runs 100 to 200 live chains and IBC moves over $1B a month, hard to rip out once integrated.
What would change this call
Q3 2026 ATOM tokenomics redesign ships and Hub TVL/ATOM price move off floor within 6-9 months. Shows whether Cosmos Hub can finally capture fee value from its own ecosystem.
Count of chains joining vs. leaving Cosmos ecosystem over next two quarters. Shows whether attrition (Evmos, Leap, Secret) is reversing or continuing.
ICF treasury balance reported in next annual filing versus 2024's $26.4M. Shows whether funding runway is stabilizing or still shrinking.
Key numbers
  • ATOM trades at $1.45, down 97% from all time high (2026-07-20)
  • Annual funding budget fell from $54.1M to $26.4M (2024-12-15)
  • Cosmos Hub TVL sits at $130K to $240K (2026-07-20)
Named risks
  • Cosmos Hub TVL near $130K-$240K shows almost no value capture despite broad SDK adoption. Severity: high
  • Ecosystem attrition accelerating: Evmos shutdown, Leap Wallet closure, Secret Network exit proposal in 2026. Severity: high
  • Two security incidents in June 2026 (Namada hack, IBC bridge exploit) undermine trust in the stack. Severity: high
  • Treasury/funding budget shrank from $54.1M (2022) to $26.4M (2024), limiting grant capacity. Severity: medium
  • Q3 2026 ATOM tokenomics redesign is unshipped and survival-critical; slippage would deepen the bleed. Severity: high

Questions people ask
Is Interchain Foundation profitable?
Interchain Foundation is a Swiss non-profit and does not report profit. Its funding-program budget shrank from about $54.1M in 2022 to $26.4M in 2024, and Cosmos Hub TVL sits near $130K-$240K as of mid-2026, per trade press dated 2026-07-20.
Who owns Interchain Foundation?
Interchain Foundation is a self-governed Swiss non-profit (Interchain Stiftung) registered in Zug, with no shareholders, governed by a Foundation Council; it wholly owns operating subsidiary Cosmos Labs GmbH, registered in Berlin as of 2026-06-24.
Could AI replace Interchain Foundation's role in Cosmos?
No. Its core asset is the Cosmos SDK, CometBFT and IBC protocol stack embedded in 100-200 live blockchains plus Swiss regulatory standing as steward, none of which AI can replicate; AI shows up mainly as a security risk vector, cited in Secret Network's July 2026 migration rationale.
What is Interchain Foundation's biggest competitor?
Ethereum's Layer 2 ecosystem (Arbitrum, Base, Optimism) plus a consolidated bridging layer (LayerZero, Wormhole, Axelar, Chainlink CCIC, Circle CCTP) are the main rivals pulling new projects away, exemplified by Secret Network's proposed Arbitrum migration in July 2026.
Is ATOM token price recovering in 2026?
No. ATOM traded around $1.45-$1.50 in July 2026, roughly 97% below its all-time high, per trade press dated 2026-07-20 and 2026-07-21, despite a planned Q3 2026 tokenomics redesign meant to shift ATOM toward fee-based value capture.
Is Interchain Foundation losing chains from its ecosystem?
Yes. In 2026, Evmos ceased operations (May 2026), Leap Wallet shut down (~May 2026), and Secret Network proposed migrating to Arbitrum (July 2026), citing AI exploit risks, signaling accelerating ecosystem attrition.
