The call

Intuit's QuickBooks and assisted-tax businesses keep growing while its DIY tax and basic bookkeeping products lose ground to free and AI-native alternatives.

Intuit sells two main products: QuickBooks, which helps small businesses keep their books, and TurboTax, which helps people file taxes. QuickBooks has a real lead because once a business puts years of data into it, switching is painful, and more than half of TurboTax users now pay for assisted help from real people. But the picture is darkening: the IRS just launched free tax filing that cuts out TurboTax for simple returns, a rival company called Xero is stealing small-business customers, and ChatGPT and Claude can now do basic tax prep and bookkeeping tasks that Intuit charges for. The company's stock dropped 59% this year partly because Intuit's own engineers publicly admitted they scrapped their AI plans twice in four months, signaling execution trouble. What matters most: whether the assisted version of TurboTax (the higher-profit layer) stops losing people to free government filing in the next few months, and whether ChatGPT simply becomes where people do their taxes instead of opening a separate Intuit app.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI ChatGPT and Anthropic Claude doing DIY tax prep and basic bookkeeping natively. Free IRS Direct File plus AI chat tools now do simple tax returns and bookkeeping, and TurboTax DIY units grew only 2% this season. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Xero and IRS Direct File. Xero keeps taking QuickBooks SMB share while Direct File offers free filing, both undercutting Intuit's DIY doorway products. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. QuickBooks' deep accountant and app integrations plus TurboTax Live's human-backed, liability-covered filing keep switching costs high.
What would change this call
TurboTax federal filing units and assisted-tax attach rate in Q4 FY26 earnings (~Aug 20, 2026). Shows whether DIY tax erosion is contained or spreading into the higher-margin assisted business.
QuickBooks Online ecosystem revenue growth rate at Q4 FY26 and Investor Day (Sept 17, 2026). Indicates whether Xero and mid-market rivals are slowing Intuit's core SMB growth engine.
Whether OpenAI or Anthropic ship native tax/bookkeeping workflows outside an Intuit partnership. Would show frontier AI bypassing Intuit's app layer rather than deepening its lock-in.

Questions people ask
Is Intuit profitable in 2026?
Yes. Intuit's FY2025 (ended July 31, 2025) revenue hit $18.8B, up 16% YoY, with GAAP EPS of $13.67 (+31%). Q3 FY2026 revenue was $8.6B (+10% YoY), and full-year FY2026 guidance was raised to $21.34-21.37B as of May 20, 2026.
Is Intuit laying off employees?
Yes. On May 20, 2026, Intuit announced cuts of about 3,000 roles, roughly 17% of its global workforce, with $300-340M in restructuring charges and office closures in Reno, NV and Woodland Hills, CA. CEO Sasan Goodarzi said the move was about simplification, not AI substitution.
Could AI replace TurboTax or Intuit's products?
Partially, in DIY tax. As of July 20, 2026, Intuit disclosed TurboTax online paying units growing only ~2% and IRS filings down ~30bps, calling it the worst industry contraction since post-COVID and admitting it 'lost on price' to free/AI alternatives. Assisted tax (TurboTax Live, ~53% of the franchise) is less exposed.
Who is Intuit's biggest competitor?
In SMB accounting, Xero is gaining share (~18%) against QuickBooks' ~35-40%, per an April 10, 2026 comparison. In DIY tax, free IRS Direct File pressured TurboTax pricing. In mid-market, Oracle NetSuite and Sage Intacct are named upsell destinations for growing Intuit customers.
Who owns Intuit?
Intuit is a publicly traded company (NASDAQ: INTU) with no controlling parent. Institutional investors own approximately 89.4% of shares and insiders about 2.16%, per stockanalysis.com data. It IPO'd on NASDAQ on March 12, 1993.
Why did Intuit's stock crash in 2026?
Intuit's market cap fell from $188B at end of 2025 to roughly $77-80B by July 13, 2026, a ~59% YTD decline. The trigger was a May 20-21, 2026 single-day drop of over 20% tied to TurboTax pricing/growth disclosures, followed by securities fraud lawsuits with a lead plaintiff deadline of September 8, 2026.
