The call

Iridium's government and maritime business still runs on locked-in contracts and spectrum, but the company itself disappears into Rocket Lab once the 2027 merger closes.

Iridium runs a network of 66 satellites that let ships, planes, and government agencies stay connected anywhere on Earth, even where cell towers do not reach. It is hard to replace because it owns special radio licenses, has security clearances, and works with 500+ resellers who depend on it, but SpaceX's Starlink and Amazon's purchase of Globalstar are chasing the same emergency-messaging customers from a different angle. The real question is not whether Iridium survives as a business, but whether Rocket Lab can pull off the merger by mid-2027 without problems and whether the deal creates value for shareholders, since Iridium shareholders will get cash and Rocket Lab stock, not Iridium stock anymore.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI product touches Iridium's satellite links; the risk is a rival's own AI-routed network, not a chatbot. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: SpaceX Starlink Direct-to-Cell and Amazon-Globalstar. Starlink Direct-to-Cell and the Amazon-Globalstar deal already serve consumer SOS texting, encroaching on Iridium's cheaper edge. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Licensed L-band spectrum, GMDSS maritime certification, and the EMSS government contract keep core defense, maritime, and aviation customers tied in.
What would change this call
EMSS government contract renewal outcome by March 2027. Loss or shrinkage would show core government moat weakening.
Rocket Lab-Iridium deal closes or breaks on CFIUS/FCC review by mid-2027. Break would remove the $27 cash plus RKLB stock payout thesis.
Starlink Direct-to-Cell or AST SpaceMobile announces maritime/aviation/government contracts. Would show consumer-edge rivals breaching Iridium's protected core niches.
Key numbers
  • Rocket Lab deal values Iridium at $54.00/share, $8.0B EV (2026-06-29)
  • Q2 2026 revenue $225.2M, up 4% year over year (2026-06-30)
  • 2.63M billable subscribers, up 6% year over year (2026-06-30)
Named risks
  • Rocket Lab acquisition could collapse on CFIUS or FCC grounds given Iridium's DoD ties. Severity: high
  • EMSS government contract renewal, due by March 2027, could shrink or lapse. Severity: high
  • Starlink, AST SpaceMobile, and Amazon-Globalstar activity could expand from consumer edge into core niches. Severity: medium
  • Elevated leverage of 3.3x OEBITDA and $1.8B debt following Aireon buyout. Severity: medium
  • Suspended earnings guidance during merger reduces investor visibility into operating trends. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Iridium Communications profitable in 2026?
Yes but declining. Q2 2026 net income was $9.7M ($0.09/share), down from $22.0M ($0.20/share) a year earlier, mostly due to Rocket Lab and Aireon deal costs. Six-month 2026 net income was $31.3M, down 40% YoY, as of June 30, 2026.
Could AI replace Iridium's satellite business?
No. Iridium's core is physical satellite connectivity, a licensed 66-satellite L-band constellation, GMDSS maritime certification, and a security-cleared US government EMSS contract, none of which software or AI can replicate; AI only touches peripheral analytics layers, per 2026 reporting.
Who is Iridium's biggest competitor?
SpaceX's Starlink Direct-to-Cell, AST SpaceMobile (targeting 45-60 satellites by end-2026 with AT&T and Vodafone), and Amazon's ~$11B bid for Globalstar are all contesting the consumer emergency-messaging edge, but as of mid-2026 none has breached Iridium's core government, maritime, or aviation base.
Who owns Iridium Communications?
Iridium trades publicly as Nasdaq: IRDM. As of June 29, 2026, it is under a definitive agreement to be acquired by Rocket Lab Corporation (Nasdaq: RKLB) for $54.00/share, with the deal expected to close mid-2027 pending shareholder and regulatory approval.
Did Iridium's Q2 2026 earnings beat or miss expectations?
Iridium missed on earnings: Q2 2026 EPS came in at $0.09 versus a Zacks consensus of $0.26, reported July 22-23, 2026, while revenue of $225.2M rose 4% YoY, driven by subscriber growth to 2.63M billable subscribers.
What happens to Iridium's government contract?
The US government is Iridium's largest single customer via the EMSS contract, generating $27.6M in Q2 2026 service revenue (+3% YoY); renewal of this contract is expected by March 2027, a key watch point given the pending Rocket Lab acquisition.
