The call

JOYY sits on a large cash pile and a growing ad business, but its main livestreaming engine faces TikTok Live head on while SHOPLINE races an AI-equipped Shopify to breakeven.

JOYY makes money by letting people watch live streams, send digital gifts to creators, and buy things through its shopping app called SHOPLINE. The live-streaming business is hard to replace because it has built up millions of creators and payment systems that work in countries like India, Mexico, and the Middle East, plus it makes money from ads that grew fast last year. But TikTok now offers live-streaming with gifts too, and it is much bigger and already operating in the same countries, so users might just use TikTok instead. Meanwhile, Shopify is a giant company that just added AI tools to help people sell things online, which makes SHOPLINE look small and less useful. The company also has an old scandal from 2020 when someone accused it of faking user numbers, and that lawsuit is still not settled, which makes investors nervous about whether the real strength of the business is true. The one thing that could save the company is if its ads business keeps growing very fast and its shopping app becomes profitable in the next year.

Why
01
AI pressure: Shopify Sidekick (agentic AI commerce assistant). Shopify's AI agent automates store setup and selling, cutting into SHOPLINE's pitch to small merchants before it turns a profit. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: TikTok Live (ByteDance). TikTok Live already monetizes gifting in Bigo's core MENA, SEA, and LatAm markets, pressuring the segment that makes 72% of revenue. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Payment rails, creator relationships, and years of local compliance work in MENA, SEA, and LatAm are slow for rivals to copy.
What would change this call
Livestreaming segment YoY growth rate in Q2 to Q4 2026 earnings reports. Reacceleration or renewed decline shows whether TikTok Live is eroding JOYY's core gifting business.
Muddy Waters class action (Case 2:20-cv-10611) settlement or ruling outcome. Adverse resolution would confirm engagement/revenue metric doubts underlying the moat.
SHOPLINE quarterly revenue growth vs. ~25% guidance and breakeven progress by end of 2026. Missing targets would show Shopify and agentic-commerce rivals are outpacing SHOPLINE.
