The call

Just Eat Takeaway.com still leads its home markets but now runs as Prosus's turnaround project while Uber and DoorDash build bigger European footprints around it.

Just Eat Takeaway.com delivers restaurant meals in Europe, mostly in the Netherlands, Germany, and UK. It is hard to replace because restaurants and customers know the brand and it has lots of restaurants signed up, but DoorDash and Uber can do exactly the same thing and have more money to spend. The key question is whether Prosus can use new technology to grow orders faster and make real profits in the next year or two, because if not, the company will slowly lose customers to its richer competitors.

Why
01
AI pressure: Prosus's own AI automation push (ToqanClaw, order-growth pilots). AI here is Prosus's turnaround bet on JET itself, cutting costs and lifting orders, not yet audited as real profit. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: DoorDash (via Deliveroo and Wolt) and Uber (pending Delivery Hero deal). Two much bigger, better funded rivals are consolidating Europe around JET's home markets: NL, Germany, UK. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep local merchant density and top share in NL, Germany and UK that took years to build and Uber/DoorDash still have to match.
What would change this call
JET reports two consecutive audited half-years of net profit (not just adjusted EBITDA). Would show the Prosus turnaround is real, not just a marketing claim.
JET exits another market beyond Denmark, e.g. Canada/SkipTheDishes. Would show Prosus is retreating further rather than stabilizing the core business.
Independent market-share data for UK/NL/Germany after DoorDash-Deliveroo and Uber-Delivery Hero deals close. Would show whether JET is actually losing ground to better-funded rivals.

  • History of large net losses (€1.645bn FY2024) despite adjusted EBITDA improvements raises doubt on true profitability. Severity: high
  • AI-driven layoffs (450 in Sep 2025) alongside new European Works Council could trigger labor friction. Severity: medium
  • Prosus turnaround relies on unaudited vendor-claimed metrics (25% order growth, $83m adjusted earnings). Severity: medium
