The call

Kamino's lending business earns real fees and holds institutional trust, but its token captures none of that value while Aave now competes for the same Solana deposits.

Kamino Finance lets people lend and borrow crypto on the Solana blockchain, and it has never had a major theft or collapse, which is good. But Aave, a much bigger lending company, just moved onto Solana in April 2026 and is taking away Kamino's advantage of being the only major choice. The KMNO token does not yet let owners share in the fees the company earns (currently $83.8 million per year), and there are billions of locked tokens waiting to be released, so if Aave gets more than one fifth of Solana's lending business while Kamino still cannot activate fee sharing, the token's value could drop sharply.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI agents could eventually route loans and liquidity across chains, but no AI-native lending rival is displacing Kamino today. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Aave via Sunrise bridge to Solana. Aave shipped onto Solana in April 2026 through Sunrise, giving deposits a bigger, more trusted brand to move toward. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Zero bad debt history, deepest Solana liquidity, and institutional deals like Galaxy's $100M GOFR program keep deposits sticky.
What would change this call
Aave's Solana lending TVL share crosses 20% within 12 months of Sunrise launch. Shows Aave is successfully pulling Solana lending share from Kamino.
KMNO governance vote on activating fee-sharing to token holders resolves. Determines whether token captures any of the $83.8M annualized protocol fees.
3.49B locked KMNO tokens begin unlocking on schedule through 2026-2027. Tests whether new sell pressure outweighs demand and pressures token price further.
Key numbers
  • $83.8M annualized protocol fees (2026-07-19)
  • KMNO down 92% from all-time high, ~$90M market cap (2026-07-19)
  • 3.49B KMNO tokens still locked (2026-07-19)
Named risks
  • KMNO fee-sharing to token holders remains stuck in governance limbo despite protocol fee generation. Severity: high
  • 3.49B locked KMNO tokens represent a major future dilution overhang as of July 2026. Severity: high
  • Aave's April 2026 Solana entry via Sunrise directly threatens Kamino's liquidity-depth moat. Severity: high
  • Kamino-sourced flash loan enabled a $1.65M exploit on Allbridge Core, July 19, 2026. Severity: medium
  • TVL and revenue figures are inconsistent across sources, complicating investor and user due diligence. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Kamino Finance profitable?
Kamino does not publish traditional profit figures as a decentralized protocol, but it holds the largest Solana lending TVL, with total supply reaching $3.34B by year-end 2025 (+13.1% despite a 35% SOL price drop) and a zero-bad-debt record through mid-2026, per its own governance reports dated 2026-02-03.
Could AI replace Kamino Finance?
No. Kamino's OpenClaw integration lets AI agents autonomously deposit, borrow, and manage yield positions, but they transact through Kamino's smart contracts rather than replacing them. Settlement, custody, and its audited zero-bad-debt track record remain protocol infrastructure AI agents use, not substitute for, as of mid-2026.
Who is Kamino Finance's biggest competitor?
Aave, the Ethereum lending giant, shipped onto Solana in April 2026 via the Sunrise cross-chain integration, directly contesting Kamino's home turf. Same-chain rivals MarginFi (~$700M TVL) and Save (~$400M TVL) also compete for deposits as of July 2026.
Was Kamino Finance hacked?
Kamino itself was not exploited, but a $1.12M flash loan drawn from Kamino was used by an attacker to exploit the Allbridge Core protocol for $1.65M on July 19, 2026. Kamino retained its zero-bad-debt record through the incident, per The Block.
Is KMNO token a good investment right now?
As of July 19, 2026, KMNO traded around $0.018-0.02 with a market cap of roughly $86-93M, down about 92-93% from its all-time high near $0.2478. 3.49B tokens remain locked, and holders have not yet voted to activate fee-sharing to token holders.
Does Kamino Finance actually make money?
Kamino earns revenue through interest spreads, origination fees, liquidation fees, and vault performance fees of roughly 10-20% of vault profits, per its own product documentation dated 2026-07-04. Cumulative protocol activity has grown steadily, but KMNO holders do not yet receive direct fee-sharing as of July 2026.
