The call

Keruyun still runs real restaurant workflows, but it now depends entirely on how Alibaba chooses to use it while Tencent and Meituan build competing tools around it.

Keruyun sells computer systems that help restaurants manage orders, payments, and customer data across China. It has real customers locked in because restaurants already use its cash registers and have years of sales data stored there, which makes it hard to switch. But two big rivals are coming at it hard: Meituan controls restaurant delivery and merchant tools, while Tencent just launched AI software that helps restaurants organize menus and answer customer questions. The one thing that could save Keruyun is if its owner, Alibaba, commits real money and strategic focus to modernize it faster than Tencent and Meituan can poach its customers, but right now it is unclear whether Alibaba will actually do that or let the business fade.

Why
01
AI pressure: Tencent Cloud restaurant-digitalization AI stack. Tencent's AI now does menu structuring, search, and merchant Q&A directly, work Keruyun's software used to own. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Meituan. Meituan's merchant tools plus delivery flywheel give restaurants a live alternative to Keruyun's management stack. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Ten years of embedded POS hardware and transaction data make switching costly for existing restaurant customers.
What would change this call
Alibaba announces Keruyun absorption into Ele.me or a divestment. Would show Alibaba no longer sees Keruyun as a standalone strategic asset.
Keruyun's actual employee count confirmed at 62 vs 2,000. Would show the unit was gutted after Alibaba's 2020 acquisition.
Meituan or Tencent Cloud publish merchant adoption numbers for restaurant digitalization tools. Would show Keruyun losing merchant share to rival tooling.

Questions people ask
Is Keruyun still an independent company?
No. Keruyun has been an operating subsidiary of Alibaba Local Life Service since around January 2020, per CB Insights and PitchBook, with no independent equity or disclosed valuation since that acquisition.
Who owns Keruyun now?
PitchBook lists Alibaba Group as Keruyun's corporate parent, with financing status 'Formerly VC-backed,' following an acquisition by Alibaba Local Life Service dated around January 2020.
Is Keruyun profitable in 2026?
Unknown. No audited financials have been public since Keruyun's 2020 Alibaba acquisition. A March 2026 Alibaba Cloud case study says a new VIP reporting tier increased monthly revenue by 'millions of dollars,' but this figure is vendor-claimed and unconfirmed.
Could AI replace Keruyun's restaurant software?
Partly. Tencent Cloud published a restaurant-digitalization AI stack on 2026-04-24 that does menu structuring, vector search, and AI Q&A, functions overlapping Keruyun's core tools, though Keruyun's POS install base and merchant data remain harder to replicate.
Who is Keruyun's biggest competitor?
Meituan's merchant-tooling and delivery ecosystem and Tencent Cloud's April 2026 AI restaurant-digitalization stack both actively target the same Chinese restaurant merchants Keruyun serves.
What does Keruyun actually do?
Keruyun, founded in 2012 in Chengdu, sells cloud restaurant-management SaaS covering POS, table reservations, WeChat ordering, membership/CRM, e-invoicing and supply-chain tools, plus proprietary 'OnPOS' hardware, per 2018 company materials.
