The call

Kijiji survives on autos and rental listings while Facebook Marketplace eats general goods and Adevinta sells off pieces of itself around it.

Kijiji lets Canadians buy and sell used items, rentals, and cars online. Facebook Marketplace is winning because it already has billions of users and can show listings to them for free, while Kijiji has to convince people to visit a separate app or website. Kijiji's plan to add bank-level identity checks in April 2026 might help with high-value items like cars, but this feature alone is unlikely to stop Facebook's growth or protect against AI shopping tools that could make both platforms less necessary. The one thing that could change everything is if Kijiji's parent company (Adevinta) decides to sell or break apart the business, which they have done in other countries already.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shopping agents could someday route buyers past listing sites, but no product is doing that to Kijiji yet. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Meta (Facebook Marketplace). Facebook Marketplace already holds about 51% of Canadian social commerce and rides Facebook's existing user base into Kijiji's turf. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep listings in autos and rentals plus a new Interac identity check that Facebook does not offer in Canada.
What would change this call
Adevinta announces a sale or carve-out process for Kijiji Canada. would confirm parent is exiting the market, consistent with Distilled, Willhaben, and Spain divestitures.
Interac's identity verification rollout tied exclusively to Kijiji listings by April 2026. would show Kijiji converting trust/safety into a defensible moat rather than losing it to Meta.
Meta launches its own Canadian ID verification or Interac partnership for Marketplace. would show Meta closing Kijiji's last differentiator in high-value P2P trust.

Questions people ask
Who owns Kijiji?
Kijiji is a brand of Adevinta, legally under Marktplaats BV. eBay sold the Classifieds Group including Kijiji to Adevinta for $9.2B, closing 2021-06-25. Adevinta itself was taken private by a Permira and Blackstone led consortium in a deal cleared by the EU on 2024-02-29.
Is Kijiji losing market share to Facebook Marketplace?
Yes. Facebook Marketplace is reported to hold roughly 51% of Canadian social commerce share as of 2025-09-28, and CBC reporting from 2025-05-18 documents behavioral shift away from local classifieds like Kijiji toward Marketplace.
Could AI shopping agents replace Kijiji?
Core search, listing description, and price recommendation workflows are exposed. A 2024-09-15 hackathon project built an LLM agent to scrape and auto-negotiate Kijiji listings, showing third parties can already disintermediate the platform's UI.
Will Kijiji be sold or divested by Adevinta?
Not confirmed as of the latest reporting. Adevinta has divested Irish (Distilled, Nov 2024), Austrian (Willhaben, Mar 2025) and Spanish (to EQT, ~2 billion euros, expected close Q1 2026) units, but Kijiji Canada remains listed as part of Adevinta's core portfolio in 2025 releases.
What is Kijiji's biggest competitive threat?
Meta's Facebook Marketplace, which has already captured the bulk of casual peer-to-peer traffic in Canada with an estimated 51% social commerce share as of September 2025, and faces no structural barrier from Kijiji's side.
Is Kijiji profitable?
Unknown. Adevinta reports only consolidated group financials, not a Kijiji Canada specific figure, so no verified profitability data exists as of the latest available reporting.
