The call

Kilimall built real delivery infrastructure in Kenya but has run nine years without new capital while Jumia outgrows it in the exact seller category it pioneered.

Kilimall runs an online store where buyers can shop from local merchants and Chinese sellers, with its own delivery trucks and pickup points across Kenya. Jumia, a much larger competitor with more money and customers, is now doing the exact same thing but better, and Chinese shopping apps like Temu and AliExpress offer even cheaper prices to the same customers. The company has not raised new money in nine years, which suggests it is running low on cash and slowly fading away. A new funding deal or a company buyout in the next year could change that story, but without one, Kilimall will keep losing customers to bigger, richer rivals.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shopping agents could just route buyers to whichever platform has more stock and faster delivery, likely Jumia over Kilimall. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Jumia (NYSE: JMIA). Jumia gets roughly double Kilimall's Kenya web traffic and is signing up Chinese sellers 60% faster year over year, the same sellers Kilimall built its business on. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A working logistics network of 1,500+ pickup points and an 8,000+ merchant base that took years to build and can't be copied overnight.
What would change this call
Kilimall announces a Series B/C funding round or acquisition within 12 months. Would show fresh capital access after a 9-year funding gap.
Kenya Revenue Authority applies the Sendy VAT ruling to KiliExpress logistics operations. Would show rising tax/regulatory cost pressure on Kilimall's margins.
Jumia reports continued 60%+ YoY growth in Chinese sellers on its next earnings call. Would show Kilimall's original cross-border wedge eroding further.

Questions people ask
Is Kilimall profitable in 2026?
No confirmed profitability data exists. Third party revenue estimates range wildly from about 13 million dollars (ZoomInfo, 2026-07-06) to 184 million dollars (SignalHire), with no audited figures published, making profitability unverifiable as of mid-2026.
Is Kilimall losing to Jumia?
Yes, by most visible metrics. Jumia's Kenya site draws roughly double Kilimall's estimated monthly traffic, and Jumia reported 167.5 million dollars in 2024 revenue while growing Chinese seller recruitment 60% year over year as of June 2025, directly targeting Kilimall's original niche.
Has Kilimall raised new funding recently?
No. Kilimall's last disclosed funding was a 10 million dollar Series A led by ANTS Capital that closed in September 2017. No newer round, acquisition, or ownership change has been publicly reported through mid-2026, a nine year capital gap.
Who owns Kilimall?
Kilimall is privately held and venture backed, founded in June 2014 in Nairobi by Yang Tao, a former Huawei employee. It is not publicly listed. Yang Tao appears as former CEO in at least one business database, with no confirmed successor named as of 2026.
Could AI replace Kilimall?
AI could automate parts of customer service and product recommendations, but Kilimall's physical logistics network, KiliExpress, its 1,500 plus Kenyan pickup points (2024), and M-Pesa payment integration are not easily replicated by software alone, though scale still favors larger rival Jumia.
What is Kilimall's biggest competitor?
Jumia (NYSE: JMIA) is Kilimall's biggest direct rival, with roughly double Kilimall's estimated Kenya web traffic and 167.5 million dollars in 2024 revenue, while also actively recruiting the Chinese cross border sellers that were once Kilimall's core differentiator.
