The call

Office software grows behind China's policy wall while games keep shrinking against Tencent and NetEase, and WPS's free international tier now competes directly with Copilot and Gemini.

Kingsoft makes WPS Office, a productivity tool used on over 650 million devices mainly in China, plus some mobile games. In China, WPS is hard to replace because the government prefers domestic software and it works seamlessly with Xiaomi devices, which blocks Microsoft and Google from competing there. Internationally, though, free AI tools like Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini are starting to do what WPS does for writing and editing, and Kingsoft's games business is shrinking fast as it loses players to bigger rivals Tencent and NetEase. The biggest question is whether Kingsoft's game division can launch hits in late 2026 or whether AI will keep chipping away at WPS sales outside China.

Why
01
AI pressure: Microsoft 365 Copilot and Google Workspace/Gemini. Copilot and Gemini offer AI writing free abroad, pressuring WPS's international consumer tier where China's policy shield does not apply. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Tencent and NetEase in gaming. Games revenue fell 28% in FY2025 and 22% in Q1 2026 as legacy titles age against these two dominant studios. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. China's domestic-software-substitution policy plus 650m+ WPS devices and Xiaomi bundling keep Microsoft and Google out of the home market.

  • AI commoditization of WPS's international individual/consumer tier by Copilot and Gemini. Severity: medium
  • Reversal of China's domestic-software-substitution policy would remove WPS's key structural moat. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
What is Kingsoft's biggest risk?
The clearest risk is the games segment, where Tencent Games and NetEase are pulling players away and Mecha Break lost most of its player base within a week of launch. Online games revenue dropped 22% year over year in Q1 2026. A second risk is international expansion, since WPS 365 has no policy shield abroad and competes directly with Microsoft and Google Workspace.
Is Kingsoft in financial trouble?
No, the core numbers look solid: FY2025 consolidated revenue reached RMB 9,682.9 million and profit attributable to owners rose 29% year over year to RMB 2,004.4 million for the year ended December 31, 2025. Gross margin stayed near 82%, and office software and services revenue was up 24% year over year in Q1 2026 (ended March 31, 2026), which is offsetting the games decline for now.
Who are Kingsoft's biggest competitors?
In gaming, Tencent Games and NetEase are the main forces taking share, contributing to a 22% year-over-year drop in Kingsoft's games revenue in Q1 2026. In productivity software abroad, Microsoft and Google Workspace/Gemini are the direct rivals for WPS 365 as it pushes internationally as of July 2026, a market where Kingsoft holds no policy protection.
Is Kingsoft at risk from AI?
Partly. Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini's office AI features threaten to erode WPS's cheap-alternative pitch outside China, but Kingsoft is folding AI directly into WPS rather than losing the product category outright. Even so, our July 2026 assessment found Kingsoft's AI integration lagging many software peers, suggesting more exposure here than most.
Does China's software policy really shield Kingsoft from Microsoft?
Yes, within China. Government software policy blocks Microsoft from the government and state-owned enterprise software tier, which gives Kingsoft a protected home lane as of the July 2026 assessment. That shield does not extend abroad, where WPS 365 competes head-on with Microsoft and Google Workspace during its July 2026 international push.
How is Kingsoft's gaming business doing?
Not well relative to bigger rivals. Total games revenue fell 22% year over year in Q1 2026 (ended March 31, 2026), and the new title Mecha Break collapsed after launch, losing most of its players within about a week. The watch item is whether the segment returns to year-over-year growth by the H2 earnings release on August 18, 2026, and whether a planned PlayStation 5 relaunch lifts concurrent players above their 2026 mid-year lows by December 2026.
