The call

Kion's warehouse automation arm is growing while Chinese rivals chip away at its forklift business, leaving the company split between a shrinking core and a rising bet.

Kion Group is a large German company that makes forklifts and warehouse automation equipment like robots that move boxes in warehouses. The warehouse robot part is hard to compete with because customers get locked into Kion's systems once they install them, but the forklift business is under real attack from cheaper Chinese competitors like Heli that are already winning customers in Europe by charging less. The company will keep making money either way, but whether its stock price goes up depends on whether the warehouse robot business can grow fast enough to make up for shrinking profits in forklifts as Chinese makers steal more sales.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI mostly helps Kion here, powering Dematic's automation and routing software rather than threatening its core business. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Chinese forklift makers (Heli and peers), plus Toyota Industries in automation via Vanderlande/Bastian. Heli and other Chinese brands are undercutting Kion's Linde forklifts on price in Europe right now, and the segment is shrinking. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Dematic's installed automation base and long integration contracts keep warehouse customers locked in even as forklift sales slip.
What would change this call
Kion's ITS segment revenue and margin trend in Q2 2026 earnings (July 30, 2026). Shows whether Chinese forklift price competition is stabilizing or still eroding the core business.
IAS (Dematic) segment growth rate over next 2-3 quarters. Tests whether automation can keep growing double-digit fast enough to offset forklift decline.
Any EU or US policy action referencing Weichai's 46.5% stake in Kion. Would show whether Chinese ownership becomes a procurement obstacle for Dematic automation deals.

Questions people ask
Is Kion Group profitable in 2025?
Yes but shrinking. Kion Group posted FY2025 group revenue of 11.297 billion euros, down 1.8 percent from 11.503 billion in 2024, while adjusted EBIT fell to 788.6 million euros from 917.2 million, as of December 31, 2025.
Is Kion Group doing layoffs?
Yes. Kion announced its LEO efficiency program on February 4, 2025, targeting roughly 140 to 160 million euros in permanent annual cost savings with 240 to 260 million euros in one-time costs, involving European headcount cuts in its industrial trucks and corporate services units.
Who owns Kion Group?
Chinese engine maker Weichai Power, via a Luxembourg holding entity, has held 46.5 percent of Kion Group since 2022, unchanged through end-2025. Free float is about 53.4 percent as of December 31, 2025, making Kion publicly traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.
Who is Kion Group's biggest competitor?
In forklifts, Toyota Industries is the global leader ahead of Kion's number-two position, while Chinese makers like Heli are actively taking European market share on price, contributing to Kion's Industrial Trucks segment revenue falling 4.9 percent in Q1 2026.
Could AI replace Kion Group's business?
Unlikely soon. Kion's forklifts and Dematic warehouse automation involve physical hardware, installed base of over 2 million trucks, and safety-certified systems that pure software cannot replicate; Kion instead uses AI as a tool via NVIDIA and Siemens partnerships announced January 2025 and January 2026.
Is Kion Group stock a safe investment right now?
Volatile. Kion shares rose 114 percent in calendar 2025 per its chairman, then fell roughly 38 to 41 percent year-to-date by July 2026, before Morgan Stanley's upgrade (price target raised from 48 to 62 euros) sparked a rally around July 7, 2026.
