The call

Ko-fi runs a profitable, well-liked tipping business with no hard wall against Patreon's fee cuts or copycats like Buy Me a Coffee.

Ko-fi is a website where artists, writers, and other creators can accept payments directly from fans, usually through small tips or memberships. It has been profitable for 15 years and charges lower fees than its main competitor Patreon, but that advantage is easy to copy. A newer rival called Buy Me a Coffee offers almost the same thing, and Patreon itself is trying to win back creators by lowering its own fees and making tipping simpler. Ko-fi could stand out if it built tools that only it has (like AI features to help creators or protections only Ko-fi offers), but right now it is just a bit faster and cheaper than the others, which is not enough to lock in its creators for the long term.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI does not directly attack the payment layer; it erodes the illustration and content work some Ko-fi creators sell, indirectly shrinking who needs the tip jar. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Patreon. Patreon cut fees mid-2025 to compete on Ko-fi's low-cost pitch, and its paying-creator count still fell about 5% into 2026, muddying who is actually winning. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Low fees, instant payouts, and creator-owned accounts keep switching cheap but also make Ko-fi easy to leave for the next cheap clone.
What would change this call
Ko-fi discloses funding round, acquisition talks, or audited revenue figures. Would clarify whether Ko-fi is pursuing scale or staying a stable lifestyle business.
Patreon's paying-creator count continues declining beyond Feb 2026. Would show incumbent losing ground, potentially to Ko-fi or Buy Me a Coffee.
Ko-fi ships vertical tooling (commissions, streaming, AI provenance features). Would show Ko-fi building structural differentiation instead of copyable UX tweaks.

  • AI-generated art and writing could erode the paying-supporter base for commission-selling creators. Severity: medium
  • No AI-powered features shipped through mid-2026 while competitors add AI content/marketing tools. Severity: medium
  • Wide, unreconciled third-party estimates on headcount, revenue, and creator count signal limited financial transparency. Severity: low
  • No disclosed funding history beyond an angel round and 2019 pre-seed limits capital for structural differentiation. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Ko-fi profitable?
Ko-fi has no disclosed funding beyond an early angel round and a July 2019 pre-seed, running as a bootstrapped, founder-led business earning 5% fees on shop and membership sales. Estimated annual revenue was about $14.1 million as of October 2025, suggesting a small but self-sustaining operation.
Who owns Ko-fi?
Ko-fi is privately held by its founders, operating as Ko-Fi Labs Limited, registered in England and Wales, company number 11087704 (as of July 2026). No parent company or acquisition has been reported; its only disclosed funding is an angel round and a July 2019 pre-seed.
Could AI replace Ko-fi?
Ko-fi's core product is a payment and page-building layer, not content generation, so it isn't directly replaceable by AI. But AI-generated art and writing could shrink the paying-supporter base for commission-selling creators, an indirect risk, with no AI-defense features shipped through July 2026.
Who is Ko-fi's biggest competitor?
Ko-fi's closest rivals are Patreon, the larger recurring-membership incumbent, and Buy Me a Coffee, a near-identical tipping platform that says it has over 2 million creators and $1 billion-plus paid out as of June 2026 (vendor-claimed). Ko-fi differentiates on 0% tip fees and instant creator-owned payouts.
How many creators use Ko-fi?
Estimates vary by source: one 2026 review cites 1.5 million active creator pages as of June 2026, while another comparison site claims over 2 million creators as of October 2025. Ko-fi does not publicly disclose an official, audited creator count.
Has Ko-fi laid off staff?
No layoffs have been publicly reported. Third-party headcount estimates vary widely from 15 to over 200 employees, but the most credible figure is around 20 employees per Seedtable (July 2026), consistent with Ko-fi's description of a small, remote-first, founder-led team.
