The call

Komainu has the licenses to survive but has not grown assets in four years while the market around it grew forty times over.

Komainu stores cryptocurrency for institutions and has all the required licenses and insurance that regulators demand. These credentials are hard to get, but every other regulated custodian has them too, so Komainu's licenses do not give it an edge over competitors like Coinbase Custody or BNY Mellon. The real problem is that Komainu has held about $5 billion in customer assets since 2022 while the entire industry grew to over $200 billion, meaning Komainu fell behind. The one thing that could save it is if its parent company, Laser Digital, stays committed to investing money and building the business, but if Laser Digital cuts support or Komainu's assets stay flat through 2026, it will likely end up as a cheap purchase by a larger bank rather than becoming a major independent business.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI doesn't move regulated cold-storage custody or licenses. The threat here is other custodians, not algorithms. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Coinbase Custody/Prime and BNY Mellon. Coinbase and BNY Mellon now sell institutional custody in Komainu's own European lane, backed by far larger balance sheets and brand recognition. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. JFSC, FCA, VARA and DFSA licenses plus bankruptcy-remote structure, hard to replicate fast but shared by every regulated rival too.

Questions people ask
Is Komainu profitable in 2026?
Komainu discloses no audited revenue or profit figures. Its parent-adjacent backer Laser Digital (Nomura's crypto arm) posted crypto trading losses in both the Apr-Jun 2025 and Oct-Dec 2025 quarters, per a February 2026 Yahoo Finance report, suggesting the wider group around Komainu is not currently generating crypto profits.
Who owns Komainu?
Komainu was founded in May 2018 as a joint venture between Nomura, Ledger, and Global Advisors/CoinShares, launching June 2020 after a JFSC license. As of 2025-2026 it describes itself as backed by Laser Digital (Nomura's crypto unit), Ledger, CoinShares, and Blockstream, which led a $75M Series B in January 2025.
Is Komainu losing market share to competitors?
Komainu's self-reported assets under custody have stayed at 'over $5B' since January 2022, still cited as a '$5bn milestone' in September 2025, while Komainu's own April 2026 commentary put industry-wide institutional custody assets above $200B, indicating Komainu's share of the growing market has shrunk sharply.
Could AI replace Komainu's custody business?
No. Komainu's core value is regulatory licensing (JFSC, FCA, VARA/DFSA) and bankruptcy-remote legal custody status that AI systems cannot hold as of 2026. AI can automate back-office tasks like reconciliation and reporting, which Komainu already markets as automated features, but licensed custodial liability remains human/legal-entity bound.
Who are Komainu's biggest competitors?
Direct rivals in institutional digital-asset custody include Fireblocks, BitGo, Anchorage Digital, and Copper, while Coinbase Custody/Prime and traditional custodian bank BNY Mellon are increasingly competing in Komainu's European institutional lane, per 2026 industry comparisons, pressuring Komainu's mid-pack 'Highflier' position among roughly 15 ranked custody firms (CB Insights, October 2025).
How much funding has Komainu raised?
Komainu raised a $25M Series A in March 2021 led by Alan Howard's Elwood Asset Management, then a $75M Series B in January 2025 from Blockstream Capital Partners, reportedly the first Series B funded entirely in Bitcoin, per Ledger Insights, January 16, 2025.
