The call

Kong sits on a real cross-cloud niche that hyperscalers keep encroaching on, with no revenue update since 2023 to show whether it still holds.

Kong builds software that directs traffic between applications and AI systems across different cloud providers, like a neutral highway for data instead of favoring one toll road owner. It is hard to copy because Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure each want customers locked into their own systems, so they have no real reason to build a fair neutral option, and AI labs like OpenAI face the same conflict of interest. The big question is whether Kong can prove its AI features are driving real new revenue in 2024 and 2025, or if it becomes just another feature that hyperscalers copy and bundle for free, turning Kong from a partner into a target.

Why
01
AI pressure: AWS Bedrock Guardrails, Azure APIM AI Gateway, Google Vertex AI governance. Hyperscalers now ship their own AI-gateway and guardrail features, chipping at the case for a separate governance layer. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure. Each cloud is folding API and AI-gateway controls into its own stack, competing directly with Kong's core product. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Enterprises running multiple clouds and multiple model vendors want a neutral layer none of the hyperscalers can credibly offer.
What would change this call
Kong publishes an ARR figure updating the Dec 2023 $100M mark. Shows whether growth has resumed or stalled since the last disclosure.
AWS re:Invent 2026 or Google Cloud Next 2026 unveils a neutral cross-cloud AI gateway. Would show hyperscalers closing the neutrality gap Kong relies on.
Kong announces an IPO filing or new funding round within 6 to 18 months. Would confirm the secondary-market liquidity timeline analysts expect.
Key numbers

Named risks
  • No official revenue disclosure since December 2023 leaves 2024 to 2026 growth trajectory unverified by the company. Severity: high
  • Hyperscalers AWS, Azure, and Google are shipping native AI gateway and governance features that could commoditize Kong's core layer. Severity: high
  • Customer counts cited across Kong's own materials range widely from 700 organizations to prior claims of 900 plus, complicating scale verification. Severity: medium
  • Shares already trade on private secondary markets without a confirmed IPO plan, creating liquidity pressure without a public exit path. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Kong profitable in 2026?
Kong has not disclosed profitability. It announced surpassing $100M in annual recurring revenue on December 13, 2023, but has issued no newer official revenue figure since, leaving its 2024 to 2026 growth trajectory unconfirmed by the company itself.
What is Kong's current valuation?
Kong was valued at $2 billion after closing a $175 million Series E round on November 19, 2024, led by Tiger Global and co-led by Balderton Capital, bringing total capital raised to roughly $345 million.
Who are Kong's biggest competitors?
Kong competes with Salesforce owned MuleSoft, Google owned Apigee, and native hyperscaler tools like Amazon API Gateway and Azure API Management, all of which bundle API management into broader cloud platforms Kong does not own.
Could AI replace Kong's product?
Unlikely soon. Kong positions itself as infrastructure AI traffic runs through, shipping AI Gateway features since February 2024 and an Agent Gateway for agent to agent traffic in April 2026, rather than a workflow AI could substitute.
Is Kong planning an IPO?
As of July 20, 2026, Kong has filed no IPO and remains privately held, though shares already trade informally on private secondary markets like Nasdaq Private Market, suggesting investor appetite for a future liquidity event.
