The call

KuCoin keeps scale and liquidity but is operating under a DOJ agreement, a US exit, and a fresh Austria ban, all landing inside a two-year window.

KuCoin runs a cryptocurrency trading platform used by 40 million people worldwide, ranking third in market share. The company's biggest problem is not competition from Binance or Coinbase, but broken trust: in early 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice forced the founder out and barred the company from American users, and in early 2026, Austria's financial regulator banned KuCoin from signing up new customers just months after approving it, citing lost staff and compliance failures. What matters most in the next year is whether KuCoin can fix its compliance problems and get back into the U.S. market by early 2027, because any new regulatory stumbles will make it nearly impossible for users to trust the platform again.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI-driven on-chain trading agents could route trades directly through smart contracts, skipping exchanges like KuCoin, but this is not happening at scale yet. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Binance. Binance holds roughly 37% of global spot volume against KuCoin's 2.9%, with deeper liquidity and no regulatory bar stopping it from copying KuCoin's playbook. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Liquidity depth and a 40M-user base built over eight years, which is hard for a new entrant to replicate quickly.

Questions people ask
Is KuCoin profitable in 2026?
KuCoin is private and does not publish audited financials. DOJ said KuCoin earned at least $184.5 million in fees from 1.5 million US users between 2017 and March 2024. No confirmed 2026 profit or loss figures exist; third-party revenue estimates are stale and unreliable.
Did KuCoin get banned in Europe?
Yes, partially. Austria's FMA banned KuCoin EU from onboarding new customers effective February 19, 2026, citing lost AML and sanctions compliance staff, just three months after granting KuCoin a MiCAR license on November 27, 2025.
Who owns KuCoin?
KuCoin was founded in September 2017 by Chun Gan, Ke Tang and Johnny Lyu, funded via a 2017 ICO and VC rounds including Jump Crypto and IDG Capital. Founders Gan and Tang were removed from management on January 27, 2025 under a DOJ deferred prosecution agreement; BC Wong is now CEO.
Could AI replace KuCoin?
Unlikely to replace the exchange itself. Custody, liquidity, order-book depth and regulatory licenses like KuCoin's MiCAR authorization are not AI-replicable. KuCoin itself launched an AI trading assistant, Kia, on December 5, 2025, automating commentary and signal generation, not custody.
Is KuCoin bigger than Binance?
No. Binance holds roughly 37% global spot market share as of Q1 2026, while KuCoin's own cited TokenInsight data shows only 2.96% overall market share in Q2 2026, despite ranking among the top three exchanges by spot share.
Can Americans trade on KuCoin?
No. As part of a January 27, 2025 guilty plea to unlicensed money transmission and a $297 to 300 million DOJ penalty, KuCoin agreed to exit the US market for at least two years, putting re-entry conditions around January 2027.
