The call

K+N still runs the world's biggest sea and air freight network, but profit keeps sliding while DSV grows bigger and AI trims headcount rather than adding new customers.

Kuehne+Nagel moves freight and packages worldwide using 1,300 physical offices, long-term customer contracts, and regulatory licenses that took decades to build. It is hard to copy because a software company or new startup cannot instantly recreate those locations, relationships, and legal permissions, but DSV (which just bought DB Schenker to become the #1 shipper by size) can compete by doing the same thing at scale. The key question is whether Kuehne+Nagel's plan to save money through layoffs and AI tools can stop its profit decline, or whether it will keep shrinking against a bigger rival.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. K+N is cutting 2,000 jobs by using AI to automate booking and paperwork, so AI is funding cost cuts, not stealing customers yet. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: DSV A/S (post-DB Schenker deal). DSV overtook K+N as the largest forwarder by revenue after buying DB Schenker, and is chasing K+N's sea and air lanes. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. 1,300 physical sites, customs bonds, and 30-year shipper contracts that a software company or a merger cannot copy overnight.
What would change this call
K+N H1 2026 earnings released July 23, 2026 show EBIT still declining year over year. Cost cuts and AI efficiency gains are not offsetting margin pressure.
DSV reports rising combined sea/air volumes or margins in lanes K+N historically dominated. DSV-Schenker merger is converting into real share gains against K+N.
Kuehne Holding announces a succession or ownership change involving Klaus-Michael Kuehne's ~55% stake. Governance transition risk becomes concrete rather than speculative.

  • Active cargo-liability litigation including Zurich American Insurance and Middlesex Insurance suits. Severity: medium
  • WARN Act investigation over Georgia layoff notice practices. Severity: low
  • Succession uncertainty at ~55%-owner Kuehne Holding as Klaus-Michael Kuehne is roughly 88-89 years old. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Kuehne+Nagel profitable in 2026?
Yes but under pressure. Q1 2026 recurring EBIT was CHF 308 million, down 17% year over year, though management raised FY2026 EBIT guidance to CHF 1.25-1.4 billion on April 25, 2026, citing cost discipline outpacing expectations.
Could AI replace Kuehne+Nagel?
Unlikely. AI automates back office and warehouse tasks, but K+N's moat is physical: about 1,300 sites, carrier-of-record liability, and roughly 400,000 customers on long contracts. The company itself deploys AI via KN SwiftLOG, rolled out to 1,000+ sites from April 2026.
Is Kuehne+Nagel laying off workers?
Yes. In October 2025 it launched a program to cut over 2,000 full-time positions targeting roughly CHF 200 million in annualized savings, explicitly framed around tech-enabled efficiencies rather than only weak demand.
Who owns Kuehne+Nagel?
Klaus-Michael Kuehne controls the company through Kuhne Holding AG, holding roughly 54-56% of shares as of December 31, 2025. The rest trades publicly on the SIX Swiss Exchange under ticker KNIN, with market cap near CHF 24.9 billion in July 2026.
Who is Kuehne+Nagel's biggest competitor?
DSV A/S, after closing its roughly EUR 14.3 billion acquisition of DB Schenker in 2025, became the world's largest freight forwarder by revenue at about USD 46 billion pro forma, overtaking K+N in total scale though not in every volume metric.
Is Kuehne+Nagel losing market share to DSV?
Partly. K+N still claims the largest air-freight tonnage (2.2 million tonnes in 2025) and top sea-freight volume (4.3 million TEU in 2025), but DSV overtook it in total revenue after absorbing DB Schenker in 2025.
