The call

Kueski holds real lending infrastructure and merchant ties in Mexico, but shrinking headcount, a small last raise, and Mercado Pago's push into credit put it on the defensive.

Kueski lends money to everyday Mexicans who don't have bank accounts, using its own records of how people repay loans and deals with big stores like Amazon and Walmart to approve and deliver credit fast. The company's main threat is MercadoLibre, a giant online marketplace that already has millions of customers in Mexico and is trying to get a banking license so it can offer loans directly through the same stores where Kueski operates today. Kueski is also shrinking: it raised $35 million in early 2025 compared to $202 million four years ago and has cut its workforce by 13 to 15 percent, suggesting the company is under real stress. Whether MercadoLibre actually wins its banking license and how quickly it steals Kueski's merchant partners will decide if Kueski survives as an independent company or becomes a takeover target.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Generic AI credit-scoring tools could commoditize underwriting, and AI-driven fraud raises Kueski's costs, but no named AI rival targets it yet. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: MercadoLibre / Mercado Pago. Mercado Pago already offers BNPL to the same shoppers and is pursuing a Mexican banking license that would let it lend directly. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. SOFOM E.N.R. lending license, years of repayment data on repeat borrowers, and existing checkout integrations with Amazon Mexico and Walmart.
What would change this call
CNBV approves or denies Mercado Pago's Mexican banking license application. Approval lets Mercado Pago offer regulated credit at Kueski's scale, sharpening the threat.
Kueski announces a new equity or debt round and discloses its size and valuation. A flat-or-up large round signals investor confidence; a smaller or down round signals continued defensive mode.
Kueski's headcount trend and Amazon Mexico 'Pago en Quincenas' partnership renewal status. Further headcount decline or loss of the Amazon integration would show shrinking distribution and scale.

Questions people ask
Is Kueski profitable in 2026?
No audited profit figures are public. Third party trackers give conflicting revenue estimates ranging from about $100M to $417.6M as of mid 2026, and headcount fell 13.3% year over year to 593 employees by July 2026, signaling cost tightening rather than confirmed profitability.
Who is Kueski's biggest competitor?
MercadoLibre's Mercado Pago is the most urgent threat as of February 2026, since it already ships BNPL in Mexico and is pursuing a Mexican banking license, putting it in direct competition with Kueski's underbanked consumer lending base without the regulatory ceiling smaller rivals face.
Is Kueski laying off employees?
Headcount dropped from a 2023 peak of 715 to 603 by December 2025 per Revelio Labs, a 15.6% decline, and Crustdata separately reported 593 employees in July 2026, down 13.3% year over year, with only one open role listed.
Could AI replace Kueski's lending business?
Kueski's own CTO Jaime Romero said in June 2026 the company runs in-house AI/ML credit decisioning on proprietary Mexican repayment and device data, but generic AI underwriting tools could commoditize scoring for smaller rivals, and AI-driven fraud is a rising cost per Interpol's March 2026 report on $442B in 2025 global fraud.
Who owns Kueski and has it raised funding recently?
Kueski is privately held and VC backed. Its last disclosed round was $35M (Series D-II) closed March 30, 2025, from investors including Altos Ventures, Angel Ventures, and Capria Ventures, down sharply from the $202M Series C led by StepStone Group and Victory Park Capital in December 2021.
How big is Kueski compared to Mexico's BNPL market?
Kueski has disbursed over 30 million loans cumulatively as of May 2026 per CB Insights, operating in a Mexican BNPL market projected to grow 27.6% in 2026 to $5.08B, a market it must defend against Mercado Pago, Aplazo, and Nelo.
