The call

LawPay's bar endorsements and trust-account compliance keep horizontal payment giants out, but Clio's bundled AI platform is the one competitor close enough to matter.

LawPay handles payment processing specifically for law firms, collecting billions of dollars annually from 56,000+ customers. It is hard to replace because law firms need special compliance (IOLTA rules, PCI security, bar association sign-offs) that take years to build, and big payment companies like Stripe cannot easily enter this world. The real threat is Clio, which bundles case management, payments, and AI tools together in one product; if Clio convinces many law firms to switch and gains real market share, or if its AI tools become much better than LawPay's MyCase product, the picture could shift.

Why
01
AI pressure: Clio's AI-native practice management platform. Clio is folding AI features and payments into one login, tempting firms to drop LawPay as a separate tool. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Stripe, Square, Adyen. Horizontal processors could enter legal payments but none have bar endorsements or IOLTA compliance built out yet. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. All 50 state bars plus the ABA endorse LawPay, and IOLTA trust accounting compliance is hard to copy fast.
What would change this call
Clio publicly reports Clio Payments volume or law-firm counts approaching LawPay's scale. Would show Clio's bundled payments product converting share from standalone processors like LawPay.
Stripe, Square, or Adyen launches a bar-association-endorsed, IOLTA-compliant legal payments product. Would show the compliance moat protecting LawPay is being breached by horizontal payment giants.
AffiniPay/LawPay undergoes another PE ownership change or sale process. Would confirm the historical 2015/2020/2024 buyout cycle continuing into a new ownership phase.

  • $20B+ payment volume processed (2024)
  • 217% revenue growth over three years (2025)
Named risks
  • Clio's bundled AI-native platform could erode LawPay's standalone payments differentiation. Severity: medium
  • IOLTA trust-account rules create compliance landmine; fee handling errors risk bar discipline for law firm customers. Severity: high
  • August 2025 corporate rebrand to 8am risks customer/market confusion and possible churn during transition. Severity: medium
  • Repeated PE ownership changes roughly every 4-5 years could introduce strategic instability. Severity: low
  • Inconsistent/opaque financial disclosures make true revenue and headcount hard to verify externally. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is LawPay (AffiniPay/8am) profitable?
No public profit figure is disclosed. In Feb 2020 TA Associates bought in at roughly 20x EBITDA on about $30M EBITDA, implying a profitable, cash-generating business; the company also reports 30% ARR growth in 2024 and 217% revenue growth over three years as of 2025.
Who owns LawPay?
LawPay is a brand of AffiniPay LLC, whose parent corporate entity rebranded to '8am' in August 2025. Ownership is private equity: TA Associates invested in 2020, Apax Funds held a stake from the 2022 MyCase deal until exiting, and Genstar Capital joined TA as investor in July 2024.
What is LawPay's biggest competitor?
Clio, an all-in-one legal practice-management platform with built-in payments, is LawPay's most cited rival as of 2026, competing via bundling. Other named competitors include EBizCharge and PaySimple, though no source shows Clio has yet caused LawPay customer churn.
Could AI replace LawPay?
Unlikely soon: LawPay's core moat is regulatory, IOLTA trust-accounting compliance, PCI DSS Level 1 certification, and endorsement by all 50 state bars and the ABA, which AI tools cannot replicate. LawPay itself is layering AI (8am IQ, launched June 2026) onto its platform rather than being displaced by it.
Did AffiniPay change its name?
Yes. In August 2025 AffiniPay's parent corporate entity rebranded to '8am,' unifying LawPay, MyCase, CASEpeer, Docketwise, CPACharge and ClientPay under one brand; LawPay itself kept its name and now operates as '8am LawPay.'
How big is LawPay's customer base?
As of June 2026, LawPay states it serves 56,000+ law firms and 115,000+ legal professionals, and is endorsed by all 50 state bar associations plus the American Bar Association, per the company's own AI-assistant information page.
