The call

Ledger still leads hardware wallets on certification and trust, but its next growth act depends on an unproven AI-agent product and a shaky crypto market.

Ledger sells physical devices that let people store and control cryptocurrency safely, plus software to manage it. The hardware itself is hard to copy because it requires expensive security certification and years of engineering; AI chatbots cannot replace a physical device that confirms transactions. But the company's profit swings with Bitcoin price, and its new plan to let AI agents use the hardware for automatic trades (Agent Stack) is still unfinished and may not attract enough customers or partners. If Agent Stack launches successfully by end of 2026 and real traders use it, the story changes; if it stalls, Ledger looks like a one-product company waiting for the next crypto boom. One wild card: any new leak or hack would damage Ledger's reputation as a security company, which is almost all it has.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-driven crypto trading and portfolio agents (e.g., chat-based swap bots). AI agents could automate swaps and portfolio calls, squeezing the wallet app layer, but they still need hardware to sign real transactions. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Block's Bitkey hardware wallet, with Coinbase and Apple as possible future entrants. Bitkey is now selling in the US and Trezor's Safe 7 is winning reviews, showing rivals can match Ledger on hardware. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. EAL5+/EAL6+ certified chips, its own BOLOS operating system, and an 8 million device installed base make Ledger hard to replace fast.
What would change this call
Whether Ledger's Agent Stack (Identity, Intents, Proof of Human) fully ships and gains partners beyond MoonPay/Shisa.ai by end of Q4 2026. Shows whether the AI-agent growth story is real or stalls, leaving hardware signing as the only proven value.
Whether a third Ledger data breach or major customer-data leak occurs following the 2020 and January 2026 incidents. Would show the trust moat eroding and accelerate switching to Trezor, Tangem, or Bitkey.
Whether Ledger's paused IPO resumes within six months of this note or stays shelved. Indicates whether crypto-market conditions and investor confidence in Ledger's growth story are recovering.

Questions people ask
Is Ledger profitable in 2026?
Ledger does not disclose profit figures publicly. Estimated revenue grew from $36.7M in 2023 to $70.9M in 2024, with 2025 described in company statements as record revenue. No net income figure has been disclosed as of July 2026.
Could AI replace Ledger's hardware wallets?
No. Ledger's physical secure-element chips (EAL5+/EAL6+) and offline key isolation cannot be replicated by software or AI. Ledger launched its own Agent Stack on July 16, 2026, positioning hardware confirmation as the required checkpoint for AI-agent crypto transactions rather than being replaced by them.
Who owns Ledger?
Ledger SAS is privately held, founded in 2014 by Eric Larchevique, Joel Pobeda, Nicolas Bacca and Thomas France. Investors include 10T Holdings, True Global Ventures, Morgan Creek, Samsung Ventures and Cathay Innovation, following a Series C totaling roughly $500M.
Has Ledger had data breaches or is it safe to trust?
Ledger has had two disclosed breaches: a 2020 incident exposing 270,000+ customers that led to a class-action suit, and a January 5, 2026 third-party breach via payment processor Global-e exposing customer order data, prompting renewed litigation scrutiny.
Who is Ledger's biggest competitor?
Trezor (SatoshiLabs) is Ledger's closest direct rival, shipping the Safe 7 in 2026 as the first hardware wallet with post-quantum cryptography. Ledger also faces Tangem's seedless NFC wallet and Jack Dorsey's Bitkey in the self-custody hardware space.
Is Ledger going public with an IPO?
Ledger engaged Goldman Sachs, Jefferies and Barclays around January 22, 2026 to explore a US NYSE IPO targeting over $4B valuation, but on May 13, 2026 it put those plans on hold citing unfavorable crypto market conditions.
