The call

Lemon built real scale in Argentina before banks could touch crypto, and now has to prove that scale still matters once they can.

Lemon Cash lets people in Argentina, Peru, and a few other countries buy, hold, and spend cryptocurrency through a phone app connected to a Visa card. For years, Lemon thrived because Argentina's biggest banks were legally blocked from offering crypto services, making Lemon the only real option for regular people. That changed in January 2026 when Argentina's government allowed banks like Banco Galicia and BBVA to start offering crypto custody, plus Nubank already has 15 million customers across Latin America and is adding similar features. The key question is whether Lemon can grow fast enough outside Argentina and keep its users engaged once the banks roll out their own versions. If banks capture most Argentine customers and Lemon fails to expand successfully to new countries, the company loses its main reason to exist.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI chat and KYC tools cut Lemon's support costs but cannot replace its licensing, custody, or card network. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Banco Galicia, BBVA Argentina, Santander Argentina, and Nubank. Argentine banks now offer crypto custody directly since Jan 2026, and Nubank's 15M+ regional base could add dollar products next. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. VASP license, 1M+ Visa cards, and $160M in custodied assets keep users inside Lemon's app instead of switching to banks.
What would change this call
Argentine web traffic or user growth for Lemon Cash decelerates further through Q3-Q4 2026. Would show bank custody products are pulling retail users away from Lemon.
Lemon Cash reports progress toward 10M users and live operations in Colombia, Mexico, Chile, Brazil by Q4 2026. Would show Lemon can replace its dissolved regulatory moat with regional distribution.
CNV extends cease-and-desist enforcement (like the one against Belo's stablecoin) to Lemon Earn or its BTC-backed card. Would show regulators are narrowing the products Lemon can legally offer.
Key numbers
  • 5.5M+ users (2026-01-16)

  • Aggressive Series B targets (10M users, 4 new countries) by roughly Q4 2026 carry high execution risk. Severity: medium
  • Web traffic down 14.9% QoQ as of June 2026 despite headcount growth signals possible demand softening. Severity: medium
  • CNV enforcement against similar stablecoin/yield products (e.g. competitor cease-and-desist March 2026) could extend to Lemon Earn or BTC-backed card. Severity: medium
  • Argentina's stabilizing economy under Milei could reduce dollarization demand underpinning Lemon's core use case. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Lemon Cash profitable in 2026?
Lemon Cash's founder stated in a February 2025 post that the company moved 'from burning millions to profitability' (vendor-claimed), but exact profitability figures are unverified. Third-party revenue estimates from ZoomInfo/Datanyze put revenue near $84.6M as of July 2026, also unverified.
Who founded Lemon Cash and when?
Lemon Cash was founded in Buenos Aires, Argentina between 2018 and 2019 by Marcelo Cavazzoli and Borja Martel Seward, according to CB Insights data dated October 7, 2025.
How many users does Lemon Cash have?
Lemon Cash reported nearly 5 million users at its October 2025 Series B announcement, growing to 5.5 million plus by January 2026, per a 99Bitcoins report dated January 16, 2026. Google Play listed 5M+ installs in November 2025.
Could AI replace Lemon Cash's business?
Unlikely to fully replace it: Lemon Cash's Visa card partnerships, Argentine CNV VASP registration, and embedded 5.5M-plus user base are regulatory and distribution moats AI can't replicate. AI is more likely to erode customer support and KYC triage workflows rather than the core regulated custody business.
Is Lemon Cash privately owned, and who invests in it?
Lemon Cash is private and venture-backed. Its most recent round was a $20M Series B in October 2025 co-led by F-Prime Capital and ParaFi Capital, with Aave founder Stani Kulechov as an angel investor, per Lemon's own blog post dated October 7, 2025.
Who is Lemon Cash's biggest competitor?
Nubank is the largest regional threat, surpassing 15 million customers in Mexico alone by July 2026 per The Motley Fool, while Argentine banks like Banco Galicia, BBVA Argentina, and Santander began offering retail crypto custody in January 2026 under a new BCRA framework, directly challenging Lemon's original moat.
