The call

The bank itself is profitable and growing, but its new name and its spot in AI-generated loan answers are both unproven right when it needs borrowers to find it.

LendingClub (now called Happen Bank) lends money to individuals and recently started offering home-improvement loans. It is hard to replace because it is a real bank with customer deposits and 150 billion pieces of credit data about borrowers, which took years to build. However, SoFi is beating it in the race to appear first when people ask AI chatbots which company to borrow from (SoFi shows up 22.4 percent of the time versus Happen's 13.6 percent), and the company just renamed itself right when it is launching a new product line, which could confuse customers about what Happen Bank actually is. The one thing that could change the picture is whether Happen can catch up in AI searches and make its home-improvement lending actually profitable by 2027.

Why
01
AI pressure: SoFi, Upstart AI-discovery answers. Chatbots naming 'best personal loan' favor SoFi (22.4%) and Upstart (16.8%) over LendingClub (13.6%), routing borrowers elsewhere. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Capital One, Chase, Amex; new charter fintech entrants. Big card issuers could launch debt-consolidation products but a conflict with their own card revenue has kept them from pushing hard so far. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A bank charter with $9.8B in deposits and 150 billion cells of proprietary repayment data most rivals cannot copy.

Unlikely to fully replace it. As of Q1 2026 over 90% of LendingClub's loan issuances required no human intervention due to AI automation, but its FDIC bank charter, $9.8B in deposits, and 150B+ cells of proprietary credit data form a moat AI-only lenders lack.
