The call

Lightyear is growing but sits far below Trade Republic and Trading 212 in scale, with a margin-squeezing regulation hitting right as it chases profitability.

Lightyear lets Europeans buy stocks and ETFs online with a clean app and multi-currency features, competing against Trade Republic (which has 100 times more customer money and already makes profit) and Trading 212 (which dominates UK customers). Nothing about Lightyear is hard to copy: Trade Republic could add the same features tomorrow, and AI that explains stock moves is becoming standard everywhere. The real test comes in 2026 when new EU rules ban a key way brokers make money, right when Lightyear says it will finally stop losing cash. If it cannot turn profitable by then, or if Trade Republic starts serving southern Europe better, it means the bigger players already won the game and Lightyear got squeezed out.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI mostly helps Lightyear explain market moves to users rather than threatening the brokerage license itself. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Trade Republic and Trading 212. Trade Republic has a banking license and 100bn euros in assets, Trading 212 has 30bn euros and UK ISA leadership, both dwarf Lightyear's 1bn dollars. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. FCA and Estonian FSA licenses plus tax wrapper products like ISA and TBSZ that take time for rivals to replicate market by market.
What would change this call
Lightyear reports 2026 profitability or continued losses in year-end statements. Shows whether it can survive PFOF margin compression that profitable rivals absorb easily.
Trade Republic or Trading 212 launches multi-currency accounts or expands into Lightyear's core Southern Europe/Ireland markets. Would show incumbents directly copying Lightyear's main differentiator.
Lightyear's AUM growth rate versus Trade Republic's expansion pace over the next 12 months. Flat or stalled AUM growth versus incumbent gains confirms the customer wedge is closing.

  • AI insight features (Lightning Updates, Why did it move) are easily copyable by rivals or generic AI assistants. Severity: medium
  • Newly launched MiCA-licensed crypto product (May 2026) faces scale and regulatory uncertainty. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Lightyear profitable in 2026?
No. Lightyear's own January 2026 blog post states its 2026 goal is to grow the European business 'to profitability', implying it was not yet profitable as of that date, right as an EU-wide PFOF ban hit margins in June 2026.
Who owns Lightyear the investing app?
Lightyear is privately held and venture-backed, founded 2021 by ex-Wise duo Martin Sokk (CEO) and Mihkel Aamer (CTO). It has raised $58m total, including a July 2025 $23m Series B led by NordicNinja with Richard Branson's Virgin Group among earlier backers.
Who is Lightyear's biggest competitor?
Trade Republic and Trading 212 dwarf Lightyear. Trade Republic held about €100bn in assets and was already profitable (€34.8m profit, FY23/24) with a banking license, while Trading 212 had 5m+ clients and ~€30bn AUM as of mid 2026, versus Lightyear's roughly $1bn AUM.
Could AI replace Lightyear's investing app?
AI can replicate Lightyear's consumer-facing AI features like Lightning Updates and 'Why did it move?', which are already commoditizable, but it cannot replace the regulated brokerage core, since Lightyear holds FCA, Estonian FSA and MiCA licenses required for custody and tax-wrapped accounts.
How much money does Lightyear manage for customers?
Lightyear reached $1 billion in customer assets under management in July 2025, operating across 25 countries in 10 languages at the time, according to its own July 2025 Series B announcement.
Does Lightyear offer crypto trading?
Yes. Lightyear launched crypto trading in May 2026, covering 12 top-traded coins in EUR/USD with a flat 0.45% fee under an EU MiCA license, per its June 2026 summer product update.
