The call

Lime holds the permits and city relationships that keep rivals out, but its own balance sheet, not a competitor, is the immediate danger.

Lime lets people rent electric scooters by the minute in cities across the world. The company is hard to replace because it has permits and contracts with cities that take years to get, and it works through the Uber app, which brings in customers automatically. Most other scooter companies have already failed or been bought. However, Lime just went public in July 2026 with a big problem: it owes about $846 million in the next year but only has $261 million in cash, and it is still losing tens of millions of dollars every quarter. The company needs to refinance that debt in the next six months, and if banks will not lend the money or demand harsh terms, the whole business could be in trouble.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI routing and fleet-rebalancing software helps Lime cut costs, it isn't a threat that eats the business. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Uber (integration partner, not yet a rival). Uber can pull the in-app scooter listing at will; Lime's ride volume leans on a deal that only runs through 2028. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. City permits and semi-exclusive municipal contracts across ~230 cities are hard for a new entrant to duplicate fast.

Questions people ask
Is Lime profitable in 2026?
No. Lime's net loss widened to $59.3M in FY2025 despite 29% revenue growth to $886.72M, and free cash flow flipped negative to -$79.2M in Q1 2026 due to seasonality and fleet capex, per its S-1 disclosures as of March 2026.
Is Lime in financial trouble or facing bankruptcy risk?
Lime's S-1 disclosed 'substantial doubt' about its ability to continue as a going concern as of May 2026, citing $845.8M in debt due within 12 months against only $261.3M cash as of March 2026. Its July 2026 IPO raised only $141.6M net, insufficient to cover the gap.
Who owns Lime and is it public now?
Lime (Neutron Holdings) IPO'd on Nasdaq under ticker LIME on July 1, 2026, raising $167-174M at a $1.6-1.66B valuation. Uber Technologies holds roughly 22-24% post-IPO; CEO Wayne Ting and Chairman Brad Bao also sold secondary shares in the offering.
Could AI replace Lime's business?
No. Lime's core product is physical scooter and e-bike rental tied to city permits and a fleet on the ground; AI can only assist with rebalancing, pricing, or maintenance forecasting, not substitute for the vehicles or municipal permits that form Lime's moat as of 2026.
Who is Lime's biggest competitor?
In the US, Bird Rides collapsed into Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023 and was acquired by Third Lane Mobility in 2024, leaving Lime dominant. In Europe, Tier-Dott (over €300M revenue run rate, EBITDA-positive late 2025) and Voi (€178M FY2025 revenue) are closing the gap, per June 2026 industry reporting.
Is Lime's Uber partnership at risk?
Lime's Uber app-integration deal was renewed in May 2025 through 2028 and generated over 14% of 2025 revenue, but the agreement is subject to unilateral termination by Uber under certain conditions, making it a material dependency for Lime as of 2026.
