Litera
Litera makes document drafting, redlining, and workflow software for law firms.
Litera is wired into how big law firms already work, but Claude for Legal and Thomson Reuters are now reaching those same firms without going through Litera at all.
Litera sells document automation and contract review software to law firms (15,000 of them, including almost all the biggest ones). It has been hard to replace because the rules and templates are baked into Microsoft 365 and locked into 30-year-old workflows, but that advantage is cracking. Claude for Legal (coming May 2026) will let firms skip Litera entirely by connecting straight to their document storage through iManage or NetDocuments, and newer AI-native competitors like Harvey are attacking the same drafting and contract work Litera does. The real question: when big law firms renew their contracts in 2026 and 2027, will they stick with Litera as their main AI layer, or will they go straight to Harvey or Claude instead.
Litera lands (or remains excluded from) the next Claude-for-Legal connector round. Would show whether Litera is being integrated with or routed around by frontier AI labs.
Hg Capital sells, recaps, or takes a secondary stake in Litera within 12-24 months. Would show how owners are pricing disintermediation risk to Litera's business.
- 99% of Am Law 100 use Litera products
- Headcount down 6.0% to 1,516 employees
- Lito made free across products in Oct 2025
- Frontier AI labs (Anthropic) building direct DMS connectors that bypass Litera entirely.
- Free Lito rollout compresses margins without proven paid-seat retention.
- Conflicting revenue estimates across data vendors obscure true financial health.
- Headcount decline of 6.0% in 2025 signals possible cost pressure ahead of PE ownership event.
- Hg's 5 to 7 year hold period raises exit or ownership transition risk within 12 to 24 months.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic (Claude for Legal) | losing to | May 12, 2026 launch connected directly to iManage, NetDocuments, Ironclad, Harvey, excluding Litera |
| Thomson Reuters CoCounsel | contesting | Migrated users onto CoCounsel post-Casetext acquisition in April 2025 |
| Harvey AI | contesting | AI-native platform partnered with Allen & Overy and PwC as of March 2026 |
| iManage / NetDocuments | gaining on | Received direct Anthropic connectors in May 2026, positioning as AI routing layer over Litera |
| Clio | contesting | Completed $1B vLex acquisition and $500M Series G at $5B valuation, per June 2026 research |
- Is Litera profitable in 2026?
- Profitability is not disclosed. Litera is private equity backed by Hg, with third-party revenue estimates ranging widely from $172.8M (ZoomInfo, July 2026) to $380M (PrivCo, 2024), and no public profit figures have been reported.
- Could AI replace Litera?
- Litera's core drafting, comparison and contract-review workflows are directly targeted by AI tools. Anthropic's Claude for Legal launched May 12, 2026 with connectors into iManage, NetDocuments and Harvey, notably excluding Litera, raising bypass risk.
- Who owns Litera?
- UK private equity firm Hg is Litera's majority owner, having first invested in May 2019 and led a further majority investment in November 2021. Hg remains the current owner as of mid-2026, with no IPO or public listing.
- Is Litera laying off staff?
- Headcount signals conflict: Revelio Labs reports 1,516 employees as of December 2025, down 6.0% from a 2024 peak of 1,610, while Crustdata reports about 1,549 employees as of June 2026, showing modest growth.
- Who is Litera's biggest competitor?
- Litera faces Thomson Reuters CoCounsel (post-Casetext, migrated users April 2025), AI-native Harvey AI, and DMS players iManage and NetDocuments, which Anthropic's May 2026 Claude for Legal connected to directly, bypassing Litera.
- Did Litera make its AI free?
- Yes. In October 2025, Litera made its Lito AI agent free across Draft Base/Pro/Advanced and Kira for all customers, a pricing pivot the company frames as democratizing AI but which signals margin compression.
