The call

Livepeer's usage is climbing fast, but it competes on price against richer GPU networks and clouds while its own token treasury keeps shrinking.

Liveperson runs a shared network where people can rent computing power to process live video and AI tasks, and it is growing quickly. The problem is that nothing stops bigger rivals like io.net, Render Network, or simply using Amazon Web Services from offering the same service cheaper or better. The company depends on its LPT token for funding, which has collapsed 95 to 99 percent since 2021, and it has not raised outside money in 4.5 years, so a successful product launch this summer (Five-Minute API by June 30, 2026) or a new funding round could prove the company can survive the price war, but so far it looks stuck between specialists with more cash and giants with better brands.

Why
01
AI pressure: io.net, Render Network, RunPod, Fal. Cheaper, better-funded GPU networks and inference APIs undercut Livepeer on the exact same commodity: raw compute for AI video. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: AWS, Google Cloud, Azure. Big clouds keep adding cheaper GPU inference and video tooling, squeezing the price gap that justifies going decentralized at all. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A live, growing network already processing real AI video workloads at scale, which gives it usage data and integrations rivals still have to build.
What would change this call
Five-Minute API launch by 30 June 2026 ships on time with adoption. Shows execution capability and ability to convert cheap compute into workflow lock-in.
Q2 2026 Messari report (~August 2026) shows usage growth vs Q1's 71.9% QoQ. Confirms whether AI-video demand is sustained or flattening.
New outside-led equity round announced (or not) by end of 2026. Tests whether treasury/token funding can be replaced before capital runs out.
Key numbers
  • 134.4M minutes processed, up 71.9% QoQ (Q1 2026)
  • AI inference is ~60% of protocol revenue (Q1 2026)
  • LPT token down 95-99% since 2021 peak (June 2026)
Named risks
  • LPT down 95-99% from its November 2021 peak, weakening treasury-funded network incentives. Severity: high
  • No new equity round since January 2022, over four years of reliance on crypto-cycle-exposed treasury funding. Severity: high
  • Legacy transcoding fees expected to decline as workload shifts to AI, per Livepeer's own Q1 2026 report. Severity: medium
  • Crowded field of better-funded decentralized GPU rivals (io.net, Render, Akash, Aethir) and centralized clouds. Severity: high
  • Q2 2026 roadmap flags unfunded design and support capacity after a contractor's departure. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Livepeer profitable in 2026?
Livepeer does not report corporate profit; protocol fee revenue was only $154,700 in Q1 2026, up 15.5% QoQ per its May 18, 2026 report. No fresh equity round has landed since January 2022, and LPT trades 95 to 99 percent below its November 2021 peak.
Has Livepeer had layoffs recently?
No layoff announcement for 2025 or 2026 is documented. The last public headcount figure is 32 employees from January 2022, tied to its $20M round with Alan Howard and Tiger Global. Current staffing across its decentralized entities is not disclosed.
Could AI replace Livepeer's core business?
Livepeer's own Q1 2026 report says it expects transcoding fees to decline as workloads shift to AI video generation, meaning centralized AI clouds like AWS, RunPod and Fal are already cannibalizing its legacy transcoding revenue even as AI-inference fees grow.
Who is Livepeer's biggest competitor?
Livepeer competes with decentralized GPU networks io.net, which claimed over 320,000 GPUs as of June 2026, plus Render and Akash Network, and with centralized clouds AWS, Google Cloud and Azure; Akash's token surged 53.88% in the 30 days before late May 2026.
Who owns Livepeer?
Livepeer is private with no IPO, comprising Livepeer Inc., founded 2016 to 2017 by Doug Petkanics and Eric Tang, the non-profit Livepeer Foundation launched June 4, 2025, and a token-holder DAO, with about $48-52M raised across four rounds through January 2022.
Is Livepeer's LPT token a good investment in 2026?
LPT traded around $1.4 to $2.6 in June 2026 with a market cap near $63-90M, down 95 to 99 percent from its roughly $99-101 all-time high in November 2021, reflecting a fragile treasury base funding network incentives.
