The call

Locket makes real money from a real habit, but the habit is a feature Meta and Snap can copy, and BeReal shows how fast that copy can hollow a company out.

Locket is a smartphone app that lets teenagers share unfiltered photos with close friends through a home-screen widget instead of a traditional social feed. The company has real users and makes money, but it is not hard to copy: Instagram and Snapchat are both bigger, already reaching the same teens, and have already started building similar features. The one thing that could save Locket is if it keeps its users actually coming back day after day, but the app is also adding AI-generated photos to its own product, which weakens the main reason people chose it over Instagram in the first place.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Locket added its own AI selfie tool, Locket Looks, which could dilute the raw, unfiltered feel that made it different from feed apps. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Meta/Instagram. Instagram already ships Close Friends and Instants features that copy Locket's core idea, the same way it killed BeReal after BeReal hit 73.5M users. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Nine million daily users already have the widget on their home screen, and switching means asking every friend to reinstall something new.
What would change this call
Meta or Snap launches a home screen widget feature for close friends photo sharing. Would show the core distribution moat is copyable, echoing BeReal's collapse pattern.
Locket's DAU or DAU/MAU ratio published across a full year including a decline period. Would show whether usage is durable or fading like BeReal's post-hype drop.
A state attorney general opens an age verification inquiry or action involving Locket. Would show regulatory risk materializing given its heavily Gen Alpha user base.
Key numbers
  • 9M+ daily active users (Aug 2025)
  • 80M+ downloads, profitable since 2024 (Aug 2025)
  • ~80% of users are Gen Alpha (Nov 2025)
Named risks
  • Meta or Snap could ship a home-screen close-friends widget, replicating BeReal's collapse pattern. Severity: high
  • Weak, checkbox-only age verification amid new state laws like Texas SB 2420 (upheld July 2026). Severity: high
  • AI selfie feature Locket Looks (July 2026) may dilute the app's core authenticity differentiator. Severity: medium
  • Broader teen-safety litigation wave against Meta ($1.4T claim) and Snap (settled) could spill into scrutiny of Locket. Severity: medium
  • No funding since 2022 leaves limited capital cushion if growth or monetization stalls. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Locket profitable in 2026?
Yes. Locket told TechCrunch it achieved profitability in 2024 despite raising only $12.5M total. As of August 2025 it reported 9M+ daily active users, 80M+ downloads, and 10B+ photos shared, suggesting the profitable trend has continued into 2026.
Who founded Locket and when did it launch?
Matt Moss built Locket in 2021 as a personal gift for his long-distance girlfriend. It launched publicly on the App Store January 1, 2022, then raised $12.5M in 2022 seed funding led by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, per TechCrunch, August 2, 2022.
Could Meta or Snap kill Locket the way Instagram killed BeReal?
It's a real risk. BeReal fell from about 73.5M users in 2022 to roughly 23M by early 2024 after Instagram shipped a copycat feature. Meta and Snap already have close-friends photo tools; a dedicated widget clone could similarly threaten Locket, which has no structural block against it.
Is Locket safe for kids given its mostly teen user base?
Concerns exist. An independent safeguarding review (Ineqe, November 2025) found Locket has no real age-verification beyond a checkbox, while roughly 80% of its active users are Gen Alpha per a 2025 profile. New laws like Texas's SB 2420, upheld by the Supreme Court July 6, 2026, raise compliance risk.
Has Locket been acquired or gone public?
No. As of August 2025, TechCrunch reported Locket's total funding remained $12.5 million, raised entirely in 2022, with no new rounds, acquisition, or IPO reported since. It remains an independent, privately held company.
Who is Locket's biggest competitor?
Instagram/Meta and Snapchat are the most imminent threats, both having shipped close-friends or spontaneous-photo features that overlap with Locket's core loop. BeReal, Lapse, LiveIn, Whee, and Retro are smaller direct peers in the same close-friends photo-sharing category as of June 2026.
