The call

A profitable provincial carrier waiting on a Shanghai listing, flying the same Hangzhou routes as bigger rivals with thinner margins to spare.

Loong Air operates flights mainly from Hangzhou in eastern China, making money by flying popular routes efficiently. It's somewhat protected by government support and airport slot access, but Spring Airlines (a bigger private carrier) and China's three giant state airlines can easily fly the same routes and undercut prices. The biggest question coming up is whether the Shanghai Stock Exchange approves its initial public offering planned for later in 2026, which would give the airline fresh cash to grow and make its financial picture clearer to outside investors.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shows up here as ticketing chatbots and dynamic-pricing software, not as a threat to seats sold or routes flown. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Spring Airlines and the Big Three state carriers (Air China, China Eastern, China Southern). Spring Airlines, twice Loong's size, and China Eastern's China United subsidiary fly the same low-cost routes out of the same region. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. CAAC certification, Zhejiang provincial ownership ties, and Hangzhou airport slot allocation keep it the only home carrier of the province.
What would change this call
Shanghai Stock Exchange ruling on Loong Air's main-board IPO application filed June 2026. Approval or rejection shows whether capital markets trust its growth and financing plan.
Spring Airlines or China United Airlines adding flights or capacity on Hangzhou routes in 2026-2027. Would show rivals directly contesting Loong Air's home base and pressuring its margins.
Loong Air's net margin in H2 2026 filings versus fuel prices and travel demand. A drop from the 6.5% net margin would reveal how thin its profit cushion really is.
