The call

Results now swing hard with gold prices while Mainland store count shrinks, leaving overseas expansion as the untested answer to a bigger domestic rival.

Luk Fook sells jewelry through nearly 2,900 stores across Asia, mostly in mainland China, and makes good profits from gold, diamonds, and gems. The company is being squeezed by its much larger competitor Chow Tai Fook, which has more stores and deeper pockets, and Luk Fook's home market in mainland China is shrinking fast (it closed about 18 percent of stores there in two years). Profits also swing wildly based on gold prices and betting on future prices, which swamped the company's actual business results last year. The one thing that could save Luk Fook is if it successfully opens stores in Vietnam, Singapore, and three other new countries faster than Chow Tai Fook can follow, creating a real lead before the bigger rival catches up.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Jewelry buying still runs on in-store trust and gem certification, not chatbots or recommendation engines. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group. Chow Tai Fook already runs ~7,000 stores and roughly USD11.5bn revenue, and is following Luk Fook into the same overseas markets it needs for growth. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. De Beers sightholder status, in-house gem testing, and a 35-year tourist-trusted brand across 2,857 stores.

Questions people ask
Is Luk Fook Holdings profitable in 2026?
Yes. H1 FY2026 (Apr to Sep 2025) net profit rose 44.1% year on year to HK$601 million on revenue of HK$6.84 billion, with a record gross margin of 34.7%, as reported 19 June 2026 via Quartr investor summary.
How does Luk Fook compare to Chow Tai Fook?
Luk Fook is materially smaller: it operated 2,857 shops as of June 2026 versus Chow Tai Fook's roughly 5,205 to 7,065 points of sale and about USD11.5bn revenue, ranking among the world's top 10 luxury companies per Deloitte, as of December 2025.
Could AI replace Luk Fook's jewelry business?
Unlikely in its core operations. Luk Fook's moats are physical: 2,857 stores, De Beers sightholder status since 2015, and in house gem testing accredited to CNAS/ISO 17025 in 2025. No AI deployment was disclosed, and AI exposure is limited mainly to back office and CRM functions.
Is Luk Fook stock safe to invest in right now?
It is volatile: the stock traded in a 52 week range of roughly HK$13.70 to HK$28.14 as of September 2025 and was down over 30% from its 52 week high by mid July 2026, though CICC maintained an Outperform rating with a HK$34.31 target price on 16 July 2026.
Why did Luk Fook's profit fall in FY2025?
Group net profit fell 39.3% to HK$1,068 million in the year ended 31 March 2025 due to widening gold hedging losses despite gross profit rising 5.8% to HK$4.42 billion, as record high gold prices depressed sales volumes, per a 27 June 2025 report.
Is Luk Fook shrinking or growing its store network?
Both: Mainland China shops fell from 3,490 to 3,179 in the year to 31 March 2025, and global shop count dropped further to 2,857 by June 2026, even as the company entered Vietnam and re entered Singapore in 2026 to expand overseas.
