The call

Lunar has a real license and a real deposit guarantee, but it is still unprofitable, flat-valued since 2022, and squeezed between a much bigger Revolut and Nordic banks closing the gap.

Lunar is a real bank in Denmark that lets people manage money through an app, with 1 million customers and about $132 million in annual revenue. It is protected from pure tech competitors by having an actual banking license and access to Denmark's payment system, which takes years and regulatory approval to get. But larger neobanks like Revolut (45 million users worldwide) offer the same basic service at much bigger scale, and the big traditional banks in Nordea, Danske Bank, and SEB are rapidly improving their own phone apps to compete, bringing their existing customers and lending power to the fight. The one thing that matters most: whether Lunar finally makes a profit in 2026 and whether its new lending products like credit cards and overdrafts actually work without losing money to bad debts, because that will show if it can survive the squeeze between larger competitors above and below.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI-native bank or agent is named as eating Lunar's business; AI shows up as a feature inside banking apps, not as a predator here. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Revolut, plus Nordea, Danske Bank, SEB and Handelsbanken. Revolut has 45M+ users to Lunar's 1M, while Nordic incumbents with 10x the customer base are closing the mobile UX gap Lunar built its name on. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Danish banking license, DFSA supervision and the €100,000 deposit guarantee give Lunar legal standing that pure fintech apps and AI tools cannot copy.
