The call

Luno's licensing and bank ties keep global rivals out for now, but stale financials and a shaky parent leave its next chapter unwritten.

Luno lets people in Africa buy and sell Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. It has real advantages that are hard to copy: it got official government permission in South Africa, it is built into Discovery Bank so customers can access it easily, and it knows how to handle local banking rules that stop big global rivals like Binance and Coinbase from operating freely. But that advantage is slipping: other African crypto companies like VALR and Yellow Card got the same government permission, Luno has not shared how much money it makes since 2023, and its team got cut in half even as more customers signed up, which suggests money trouble or pressure to shrink. The one thing that would change everything is whether the South African government decides in mid-2026 to restrict how money moves in and out of the country, which could kill the entire business.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-driven agentic wallets and DeFi bots (e.g. Coinbase AgentKit, MetaMask AI features). AI agents that swap crypto directly on-chain could let users skip exchanges like Luno for basic buy/sell tasks. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Binance, Coinbase, Kraken. Global giants are blocked from Luno's core markets by licensing and banking rails, not by lack of interest or capital. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. FSCA licensing in South Africa plus embedded distribution inside Discovery Bank's app, both hard for outsiders to copy fast.
What would change this call
South Africa's Capital Flow Management Regulations decision, due mid-2026. Would show whether Luno's core SA market stays open or gets restricted.
Whether Discovery Bank style embedded integration is replicated with 2-3 more banks in Nigeria, Kenya, or Malaysia within 12 months. Would show if the bank-distribution moat is scaling or was a one-off deal.
Any fresh Luno revenue, profitability, or headcount disclosure after 2025. Would show whether the business is growing or still shrinking despite customer growth.

Questions people ask
Is Luno profitable in 2026?
The last disclosed figure, from DCG CEO Barry Silbert in March 2023, put Luno revenue at $100 million with a 40% operating margin. No newer revenue or profitability disclosure has surfaced since, so current 2026 financial health is unconfirmed.
Who owns Luno?
Luno is wholly owned by Digital Currency Group (DCG), the Stamford, Connecticut crypto conglomerate founded by Barry Silbert. DCG first invested in Luno's 2014 seed round and completed a full acquisition in September 2020.
Could AI replace Luno?
Not easily. Luno's core moat is South Africa's FSCA Financial Services Provider license (awarded April 2024) plus bank-embedded distribution via Discovery Bank (live December 2025), both regulatory and banking-rail assets an AI tool cannot replicate.
Is Luno cutting jobs?
Luno cut 35% of staff (about 330 of 960 employees) in January 2023. Headcount has kept declining since, from 897 in 2023 to 751 by Q4 2025, even as customer count grew past 15 million.
Who is Luno's biggest competitor?
In South Africa, VALR passed 1 million users by November 2024 and Yellow Card also holds an FSCA license, directly contesting Luno's licensed-exchange niche. Global giants like Binance and Coinbase remain blocked by regional regulatory complexity.
Will Luno go public or raise new funding?
In March 2023 Luno hired Canaccord Genuity to seek new investors and prepare for an eventual public listing. As of June 2026, no funding round or IPO has been confirmed, per PitchBook's company profile.
