Maple Finance
On-chain lending protocol that funds crypto institutions with tokenized credit.
Maple is growing faster than its shrinking sector on the strength of integrations, but a Morpho institutional product or a borrower default in the next downturn would test that quickly.
Maple Finance lets large institutions borrow and lend money directly on the blockchain, handling the whole process automatically. It is hard to replace right now because banks, crypto platforms like Kraken, and trading firms already use it, and Maple is actually growing while most crypto companies are shrinking. However, Morpho is a similar service growing much faster with $10 billion in it, and artificial intelligence could one day take over the job of deciding who gets approved for loans. The biggest wildcard: if Morpho or a major bank launches their own version and takes away Maple's customers, or if another big borrower defaults and scares people away.
Maple reports a major borrower default in its loan book during a crypto downturn. Would show credit risk materializing like the 2022 Orthogonal Trading default.
SEC or CFTC takes enforcement action on tokenized institutional credit products. Would show regulatory risk hitting Maple's core business model.
- AUM crossed $5B with $2B+ active loans
- Grew 22% in Q2 2026 while sector fell 31%
- 2026 ARR target set at $100M vs $30M in 2025
- Borrower default risk, as in the 2022 Orthogonal Trading loss of ~$36M.
- Cyclical crypto credit demand could reverse counter-cyclical AUM growth seen in 2026.
- Evolving SEC/CFTC posture on tokenized credit and stablecoin lending under Chairman Atkins.
- Morpho's institutional-vault growth to $10B+ TVL could pull AUM from Maple.
- SYRUP token price can move independently of protocol execution, unlike equity.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Morpho | gaining on | TVL grew from ~$2B to $10B+ on institutional adoption, as of 2026-07-08 comparison |
| Aave | contesting | Holds ~$20-26B TVL (April 2026) while also integrating Maple's syrupUSDC/USDT as of 2026-07-21 |
| Centrifuge, Goldfinch, Clearpool | contesting | Niche tokenized private-credit peers compared directly to Maple in a 2026-05-26 analysis |
| Ondo Finance | contesting | Named as adjacent competitor in tokenized treasuries/RWA space, per 2025-10-03 comparison |
- Is Maple Finance profitable?
- Maple Finance is not disclosed as profitable in traditional terms; it reported a $30M annualized revenue run-rate (ARR) at Q4 2025 and set a 2026 target of $100M ARR, per its own January 23, 2026 data review. As a token-governed protocol with no outside equity, it has no reported net income figure.
- Who owns Maple Finance?
- Maple Finance is a DAO-governed protocol controlled via the SYRUP token, not a conventionally owned company. Its dev entity, Maple Labs Pty Ltd, states it has raised no external equity capital and has no dividend-bearing equity class, per its own token transparency filing dated June 4, 2026. Founders are Sidney Powell and Joe Flanagan.
- Could AI replace Maple Finance?
- Unlikely soon. AI tools like Reply's AI Credit Memo can automate underwriting analysis, but Maple's value sits in KYC'd institutional borrower relationships, on-chain settlement infrastructure, and integrations with Aave, Kraken, Cantor Fitzgerald and others, none of which a standalone AI underwriting tool replicates, as of July 2026 reporting.
- What is Maple Finance's biggest competitor?
- Morpho is the most cited emerging threat, growing from about $2B to over $10B in TVL on institutional adoption as of a July 8, 2026 comparison. Aave, with roughly $20-26B TVL across 22+ chains (April 2026), is the larger incumbent, though analysts frame it as complementary rather than directly substitutable.
- Has Maple Finance ever had a default or lost lender money?
- Yes. In 2022, a borrower, Orthogonal Trading, defaulted on Maple Finance loans, costing lenders approximately $36M, according to a June 15, 2026 industry guide. The protocol has since grown AUM from roughly $516M at the start of 2025 to $4.59B by year-end 2025 without a repeat incident being reported.
- Is Maple Finance's SYRUP token risky?
- SYRUP traded around $0.19 with a circulating market cap of about $222M as of July 21, 2026, per Coinbase data. It resulted from a 2024 MPL-to-SYRUP migration at a 1:100 ratio. As a token rather than equity, its value can move independently of Maple's underlying business execution.
