The call

Mastercard is folding stablecoins and AI agents into its network through deals like BVNK and Agent Pay rather than being routed around by them, at least for now.

Mastercard runs the system that lets banks and stores process credit card payments in over 210 countries. It is hard to replace because banks and merchants are locked into its rules, compliance systems, and the way chargebacks work, and switching away would be extremely complicated and costly. The real threat is that cryptocurrency transactions and AI payment systems could start sending money around Mastercard entirely instead of just growing alongside it, especially if the BVNK acquisition helps crypto users skip the traditional network.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI checkout and shopping agents (agentic commerce platforms). AI agents could pick bank rails or stablecoins directly, but Mastercard just launched Agent Pay for Machines with 30+ partners to stay in that loop. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Stablecoin settlement networks (Circle, Tether) and bank-run instant rails like FedNow/RTP. On-chain settlement hit about $7.5T a month by March 2026, mostly running alongside Mastercard so far, not yet routing volume around its rails. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Deep regulatory and dispute-handling infrastructure plus near-universal merchant acceptance that new rails still have to plug into.
What would change this call
Stablecoin settlement volume begins routing around Mastercard rails rather than through BVNK partnerships. Would show on-chain rails are disintermediating, not just feeding, Mastercard's network.
Q2 2026 earnings (July 30) show Value-Added Services growth falling below core network growth. Would signal the second growth engine is stalling relative to card volume.
BVNK acquisition fails to close or faces regulatory blockage within its 6-month window. Would show Mastercard struggling to capture crypto-native settlement flow.

Questions people ask
Is Mastercard profitable in 2026?
Yes. Mastercard's Q1 2026 revenue hit $8.40B, up 15.8% YoY, with EPS of $4.60 versus $4.41 estimated, reported April 30, 2026. TTM revenue reached $33.94B by July 17, 2026, up 16.75% YoY, showing sustained profitability and growth.
Could AI replace Mastercard?
Unlikely soon. Mastercard says one in three of its services is now AI-powered as of May 2026, spanning fraud detection and routing, and it launched Agent Pay for Machines on June 10, 2026 with 30+ partners, positioning AI to run through its network rather than bypass it.
Who is Mastercard's biggest competitor?
Visa is Mastercard's principal rival, operating at comparable global scale across issuer and acquirer relationships. American Express and UnionPay also compete, while stablecoin infrastructure firms are emerging longer-term challengers as on-chain settlement volume reached roughly $7.5 trillion monthly by March 2026.
Who owns Mastercard?
Mastercard is a publicly traded company with no controlling parent, listed on the NYSE under ticker MA since its 2006 IPO, having converted from a bank-cooperative structure founded in 1966. Market capitalization was roughly $480-490 billion as of July 20, 2026.
How exposed is Mastercard to stablecoins and crypto?
Mastercard announced a deal to acquire stablecoin infrastructure firm BVNK for up to $1.8 billion on March 16, 2026, and launched a Crypto Partner Program with 100+ crypto-native companies on March 11, 2026, aiming to bridge on-chain payments with fiat card rails.
Is Mastercard facing legal trouble over card fees?
Yes. A $38 billion Visa/Mastercard interchange antitrust settlement capping swipe fees at 1.25% for up to 8 years got preliminary court approval June 9-10, 2026, while a new suit filed by three New York merchants in April 2026 challenges the settlement's legal-immunity terms.
