The call

Materialise stays cash-positive on regulated medical software while its manufacturing and general software segments keep losing ground to cheaper, faster-moving rivals.

Materialise makes software and services for 3D printing, with its Medical division (software for doctors and hospitals) generating half its sales and growing well with good profits. The other half, Manufacturing and Software tools, are shrinking or losing money, making them easier for competitors to take over or replace with newer tools. The company will stay afloat because Medical is solid and regulated, but real growth depends on whether the struggling Manufacturing business stops losing money by 2026 and whether the Software side can stabilize after adding AI features.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-native medical image segmentation tools (e.g. Ansys/nTopology-style automation) challenging Mimics workflows. AI features shipped in Software segment but it still shrank 6.8%, suggesting rivals automate planning tasks faster than Materialise can. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Stratasys and 3D Systems in industrial manufacturing services. Bigger, better-funded rivals already compete for the same print-service contracts that pushed Materialise Manufacturing revenue down 13.2%. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Regulated FDA/CE clearances for Mimics and 3-matic lock hospitals into workflows that are costly and slow for rivals to replicate.
What would change this call
Materialise's Manufacturing segment reports positive adjusted EBITDA in FY2026 results. Would show the loss-making print-service unit stabilized instead of continuing to lose ground to rivals.
Software segment revenue decline widens beyond 10% year over year in a coming quarterly report. Would show AI feature launches failed to stop customers moving to competing design software.
Stratasys, 3D Systems, or GE Additive announce a hospital or medical-device contract win previously served by Materialise. Would show a shipped competitor is directly displacing Materialise's core Medical moat.

Could AI replace Materialise's software products?
Materialise shipped AI-enabled segmentation in Mimics 2025, but its Software segment still declined 6.8% to €40.9M in FY2025. Is Materialise laying off employees in 2026?
No layoffs were disclosed. Materialise's headcount stood at roughly 2,444 to 2,556 employees at year-end 2025, essentially flat versus 2024, per Revelio Labs (2026-06-29) and stockanalysis.com (2026-06-25) estimates.
Who is Materialise's biggest competitor?
Materialise competes with Stratasys, 3D Systems, EOS, and Nikon SLM Solutions in 3D-printing software and manufacturing, though it also co-formed the 'Leading Minds' consortium with these same firms plus HP, Renishaw, and TRUMPF at Formnext on November 18, 2024, to standardize industry workflows.
Is Materialise a safe company to join in 2026?
Materialise is a 36-year-old, cash-positive public company (€134M cash, end-2025) with a growing, regulated Medical segment (+15.4% YoY in FY2025). But it has been pruning weaker units, divesting RapidFit on March 31, 2026, and Eyewear on May 7, 2026, with expected Q2 2026 impairment charges.
