The call

MediaMarktSaturn is growing and profitable while Amazon, Temu, and a pending JD.com deal all sit unresolved around it.

MediaMarktSaturn sells electronics, appliances, and related services across Europe through over 1,000 stores, offering installation and warranty coverage alongside online shopping. Amazon already ships these products faster and cheaper in most markets, while Temu undercuts on price for budget items, so the company's physical stores and service teams are not as hard to replace as they once were. The biggest unknown is whether the EU will approve a Chinese investor (JD.com) buying the company in mid-2026, which could bring new money but also new risk.

Why
01
AI pressure: Amazon's AI shopping assistant (Rufus) and AI-driven price bots on Temu. AI shopping agents could route CE purchases straight through Amazon or Temu, skipping MediaMarktSaturn's stores and marketplace entirely. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Amazon and Temu. Management names Amazon and Temu directly as reasons for flat growth guidance through FY2028/29. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Physical footprint of 1,000+ stores with installation, repair, and warranty services that pure online rivals cannot easily copy.
What would change this call
EU Foreign Subsidies Regulation ruling on JD.com/Ceconomy deal in H2 2026. Shows whether the deal proceeds, is blocked, or is heavily conditioned after formal charges.
Ceconomy's 12-quarter consecutive revenue growth streak breaks in a quarterly report. Would show Amazon/Temu pressure is now outweighing MediaMarktSaturn's physical-services moat.
Adjusted EBIT margin falls below 1.6% in a future quarterly report. Would show thin margins compressing further under competitive or deal-related strain.

Questions people ask
Is MediaMarktSaturn profitable in 2025?
Yes. For FY2024/25 (ended September 2025), MediaMarktSaturn parent Ceconomy reported total sales of €23.1 billion, up 5.7% year-over-year, with adjusted EBIT growing 24% to €378 million, marking 11 to 12 consecutive quarters of growth as of early 2026.
Who owns MediaMarktSaturn?
MediaMarktSaturn is a subsidiary of publicly listed Ceconomy AG (Frankfurt: CEC), with major shareholders Haniel Finance (~16.7%), Palatin (~11.1%), freenet AG (~6.7%), Beisheim (~4.8%) and Morgan Stanley (~4.68%) as of April 2026. JD.com agreed to acquire Ceconomy for €2.2 billion in July 2025, pending EU regulatory review.
Is JD.com's acquisition of MediaMarktSaturn's parent Ceconomy going to close?
Uncertain as of July 2026. JD.com agreed €2.2 billion (€4.60/share) in July 2025 and got German conditional approval by June 30, 2026, but the EU Commission issued formal Foreign Subsidies Regulation charges against JD.com on July 22, 2026. JD.com still expects resolution in H2 2026.
Could AI replace MediaMarktSaturn's stores or staff?
Not the physical business. AI mainly automates in-store product lookup and customer Q&A via tools like MyBuddy, a voice AI agent built on Microsoft Azure OpenAI with Accenture and Avanade, launched around June 2025. Installation, repair, warranty service and 1,000-plus physical stores remain labor-dependent and largely insulated.
Who is MediaMarktSaturn's biggest competitor?
Management explicitly names Amazon and Temu as reasons for its muted revenue growth guidance of only about €24 billion by FY2028/29, stated at its Strategy Day on July 9, 2026, despite reporting €23.2 billion revenue that fiscal year and 12 consecutive quarters of growth.
How big is MediaMarktSaturn's online and marketplace business?
Online sales grew 13.3% to €5.7 billion in FY2024/25 (26% of total sales), and online share hit 30.1% in Q1 FY2025/26 (Oct-Dec 2025), the highest since COVID. Marketplace GMV reached €527 million, up 90% year-over-year, with a target to exceed €1.6 billion by FY2028/29.
