The call

Megvii built China's early facial recognition business but has shown no public move into the multimodal AI wave now absorbing its core function.

Megvii built software that recognizes faces and reads images, competing mainly in China. The problem is that larger companies like Hikvision and SenseTime, plus massive platforms run by Baidu and Alibaba, can now do the same work as part of their bigger AI systems, and they have far more money and customers to lock in. Megvii's founder left in late 2024, two attempts to go public failed, the U.S. has blocked its funding, and no one outside the company knows what it plans to do next, so the one thing that could matter is whether it announces a new product or strategy in 2026 that shows it can compete in the new AI world.

Why
01
AI pressure: SenseTime's CV 2.0 platform models and Baidu/Alibaba/Tencent multimodal AI. Rivals now bundle facial recognition and vision tasks into general multimodal models, the exact niche Megvii built its business on. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Hikvision. State-backed Hikvision already ships AI-enabled surveillance hardware and software at a scale Megvii cannot match on capital or distribution. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Existing integrations with Chinese enterprise and state clients like Alipay and Xiaomi create switching friction, even without a public AI pivot.
What would change this call
Megvii announces a multimodal AI product or foundation-model integration in 2026. Would show Megvii adapting to the platform-model threat rather than stagnating.
Megvii publishes audited financials for fiscal 2024 or 2025. Would show financial transparency and could reveal narrowing or widening losses.
Megvii names a new CEO or announces a renewed IPO/relisting timeline. Would show resolved leadership and a credible path to liquidity.

Questions people ask
Is Megvii profitable in 2026?
Unclear, Megvii has not published audited financials since its 2021 STAR Market filing, which showed a net loss of about 1.86 billion yuan (~$256M) for H1 2021. No revenue or profit figures have been disclosed since, a sign of stalled commercialization.
Who is Megvii's biggest competitor?
SenseTime, which IDC ranked #1 in China's computer-vision AI market for 10 consecutive years through 2025 and which posted a 2024 net loss of about 4.31 billion RMB (~$600M) while publicly pivoting to multimodal 'CV 2.0' platforms, a move Megvii has not matched.
Did Megvii ever go public?
No. Megvii's ~$500M Hong Kong IPO lapsed in 2020 after US blacklisting concerns, and its Shanghai STAR Market application, approved in September 2021, stalled over 1,340 days before being formally withdrawn on November 12, 2024.
Who owns Megvii and is it still raising money?
Megvii remains privately held. A Series E round closed April 8, 2025 with investors including Ant Group, a Chongqing Yufu-backed industry fund, and Legend Holdings, though the amount was undisclosed. Its last confirmed valuation was about $4B, set in May 2019.
Could generative AI or multimodal models replace Megvii's technology?
Megvii's core facial-recognition and computer-vision products are the exact capability now absorbed natively into multimodal foundation models. Rival SenseTime has publicly pivoted to 'CV 2.0' multimodal platforms by 2025-2026; no equivalent pivot from Megvii has been reported.
Who is Megvii's CEO now?
Founder Yin Qi stepped down as CEO in late 2024, with legal representative duties shifting to co-founder Tang Wenbin. Yin has since become chairman of LLM startup StepFun as of January 2026; Megvii's current strategic leadership is not clearly reported.
