The call

Metaco's bank contracts are real, but Ripple now owns two custody teams and the market's biggest rival just went public.

Metaco builds software that lets banks safely store and manage crypto assets. It has real customers like Deutsche Bank and BBVA, which is hard to replace because banks need regulatory approval and trust. However, Ripple bought Metaco in 2023 and then bought another custody company called Palisade in 2025, creating confusion about which product Ripple actually wants to use going forward. The real challenge is that other well-funded firms like Fireblocks and BitGo offer similar services and are equally approved by regulators, so Metaco is not protected by being the only choice. The biggest wildcard is whether Ripple keeps Metaco as a separate product or merges it into Palisade, which would signal the original company is being shut down rather than grown.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Custody is regulatory and cryptographic plumbing for banks, not a task AI models replace. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Fireblocks, BitGo, Anchorage Digital, Coinbase Custody. All hold similar licenses and chase the same tier-1 banks; BitGo just went public with an OCC charter, raising the bar. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Live, hard-to-rip-out deployments at DZ Bank, BBVA, and Citi built on real banking licenses and regulatory trust.

Which Ripple custody team (Metaco or Palisade) is named lead product in 2026. Shows whether Metaco's tech is being kept or retired inside Ripple.
BitGo's quarterly public filings on institutional AUC and custody revenue. Gives first transparent benchmark of custody market share versus Metaco/Ripple.
Outcome of BBVA or DZ Bank custody contract rebids in 2026. Would show if tier-1 bank clients stay with Ripple Custody or move to Fireblocks/BitGo.

Named risks
  • Ripple owns two overlapping custody firms (Metaco and Palisade), risking brand and resource dilution. Severity: high
  • Standalone Metaco identity being absorbed into 'Ripple Custody' brand, obscuring track record. Severity: medium
  • Well-capitalized, similarly licensed rivals BitGo and Fireblocks actively winning comparable bank custody deals. Severity: high
  • Any equity exposure tied to Ripple, not Metaco standalone, carries Ripple's SEC litigation overhang. Severity: medium
  • Inconsistent third-party headcount and revenue estimates suggest limited financial transparency. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Who owns Metaco now, Mastercard or Ripple?
Metaco is owned by Ripple Labs, not Mastercard. Ripple acquired Metaco outright for $250 million in May 2023, becoming its sole shareholder. Mastercard runs separate, unrelated crypto initiatives like Crypto Credential but holds no stake in Metaco as of November 2025.
Is Metaco still an independent brand?
No. Metaco's Harmonize platform is being rebranded into 'Ripple Custody'; Ripple filed a USPTO trademark for that name in February 2025. As of March 2025 reporting, Ripple materials referred to the product as 'Ripple Custody, formerly known as Metaco Harmonize'.
Is Metaco profitable?
No public financials exist since Metaco is a private business unit inside Ripple following the May 2023 acquisition. No revenue or profitability figures have been disclosed by Ripple or Metaco itself as of mid-2026.
Could AI replace what Metaco does?
Unlikely for its core value. Metaco's moat is regulatory licensing, bank-grade HSM key security, and years-long compliance integrations with banks like Citi and DZ Bank, not software AI can replicate. AI could automate adjacent KYC/AML and reporting tasks, per mid-2026 sector analysis.
Who is Metaco's biggest competitor?
Fireblocks and BitGo are the closest rivals. BitGo IPO'd on the NYSE in January 2026 with an OCC national trust charter, while Fireblocks dominates MPC custody and backs tokenized funds like BUIDL and OUSG as of May 2026, per Fireblocks' own materials.
Has Metaco lost any major bank clients?
No loss has been reported. Ripple extended the Metaco-built custody partnership with BBVA into Spain under MiCA rules in September 2025, and DZ Bank's Harmonize-based custody offering has been live since November 2023.
