The call

Microchip is climbing out of a brutal downcycle with design-win lock-in intact, while its data-center growth still runs behind Broadcom's.

Microchip Technology designs and sells microcontrollers and analog chips that go into cars, industrial machines, and aerospace equipment. Once a chip is designed into a product, it is hard and expensive for customers to switch to a rival, especially when safety certifications like ISO 26262 are involved. But Broadcom is ahead of Microchip in the fast-growing data-center market, and Microchip's own Gen 5 chip came nearly two years late, which matters because data-center growth is where the company is betting. The real test is whether the current recovery (margins at 30.6%, revenue up 35%) is sustainable or just temporary demand that will fade, plus whether Microchip can actually win design-in share against Broadcom in next-generation data-center chips.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent as a direct predator. AI data-center buildout feeds Microchip through PCIe/CXL retimer demand rather than threatening it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Broadcom. Broadcom leads PCIe/CXL switching in data centers; Microchip's own Gen5 switch shipped nearly two years late. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Multi-year automotive and industrial qualification cycles, ISO 26262 certification, and defense/aerospace trust keep customers locked in once designed in.
What would change this call
Microchip's Data Center Solutions revenue vs. its ~65% growth target to $500M in CY2026. Shows whether Gen 6 PCIe/CXL ramp is converting into real share against Broadcom or falling short.
Q1 FY27 and following 2-3 quarterly automotive/industrial revenue trends vs. Infineon, NXP, STMicroelectronics results. Shows whether core design-win share against the European trio is holding or eroding.
Any new furlough, layoff, or fab-utilization announcement from Microchip within the next year. Shows whether the FY26 recovery was structural or a demand pull-forward before another downcycle.
Key numbers
  • Q1 FY26 net sales $1.0755B, down 13.4% YoY (2025-08-07)
  • Data Center Solutions targets $500M in CY2026, up from $302.7M (2026-06)
  • Automotive grew to 18% of FY25 revenue from 11% in FY24 (2026-03)
Named risks
  • Second-source position behind Broadcom in AI data-center PCIe/CXL switching. Severity: high
  • 2026 revenue recovery may reflect demand pull-forward rather than structural growth. Severity: medium
  • Elevated leverage and high interest costs constrain capital allocation flexibility. Severity: medium
  • Repeat downcycle could force another round of furloughs, pay cuts or layoffs as in 2024-2025. Severity: medium
  • Commodity 8-bit MCU pricing erosion pressures margins at the low end. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Microchip Technology profitable in 2026?
Yes, after a deep downcycle. Q4 FY26 (ended March 31, 2026) net sales hit $1.311B, up 35.1% year over year, with non-GAAP operating margin recovering to 30.6% from just 14.0% a year earlier, per company results reported July 12, 2026.
Did Microchip Technology have layoffs?
Yes. In March 2025 Microchip cut about 2,000 jobs, roughly 9% of its workforce, at Oregon and Colorado factories and a Philippines facility, following a December 2024 closure of its Tempe, Arizona Fab 2 and suspension of its CHIPS Act funding application.
Who is Microchip Technology's biggest competitor?
In core MCUs, Microchip competes with Infineon, NXP, STMicroelectronics and Renesas; the top five collectively hold about 80% of the global MCU market as of April 2026. In AI data-center PCIe switching, CEO Steve Sanghi said Microchip's Gen 5 chip arrived nearly two years late, leaving it second-source to Broadcom.
Could AI replace Microchip Technology?
No. Microchip's moat rests on physical fabrication, multi-year automotive and aerospace design-win cycles, and certifications like ISO 26262 that AI cannot substitute. The company is instead selling into the AI boom, launching full-stack edge-AI tools for its MCUs in February 2026.
Who owns Microchip Technology?
Microchip is an independent public company trading on Nasdaq as MCHP, with market capitalization around $44.0 to $44.2 billion as of July 17 to 24, 2026. Institutional holders are active, with Invesco increasing its stake 77% in a March 2026 transaction.
Is Microchip Technology stock overvalued after its 2026 rally?
Views are split. Shares rose about 63% over six months and roughly 30% year to date as of mid-2026, then fell 17.22% over 30 days by July 22, 2026, while still up 24.31% over one year, with analysts disagreeing on whether it is undervalued or overvalued.
