The call

The Bitcoin bet built this company's size and now defines its risk, while the software business it once was keeps shrinking in relevance.

MicroStrategy buys and holds Bitcoin using stock sales and debt, then sells software to pay dividends. It is hard to beat at holding Bitcoin because it has already bought so much, but it is very easy to replace: regular people can now buy Bitcoin directly through BlackRock or Fidelity's simple ETF funds that charge less and do not dilute shareholders like MicroStrategy's new stock does. The one thing that could save the company is if its stock price trades above its actual Bitcoin holdings in value again, which would let it sell more shares and buy more Bitcoin at a profit, but right now it is trading below that level, which means new stock sales would only hurt existing owners.

Why
01
AI pressure: Microsoft Power BI with Copilot. Power BI ships free inside Microsoft 365 with AI built in, leaving Strategy's own BI product looking narrow and stuck at flat revenue. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Spot Bitcoin ETFs (BlackRock IBIT, Fidelity FBTC). ETFs give investors 1:1 Bitcoin exposure with no stock dilution and no preferred debt, undercutting the reason to hold MSTR shares instead. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. An 843,775 BTC hoard bought early and cheap, still large enough to matter even if the stock trades below its value.
What would change this call
Q2 2026 earnings (July 30, 2026) show further Bitcoin sales to fund preferred dividends. Confirms the accretive flywheel is broken and forced liquidation is continuing.
mNAV premium (market cap vs Bitcoin NAV) stays below 1x through year-end 2026. New share issuance becomes dilutive rather than accretive, deepening the treasury model's stall.
Rosen Law Firm or Pomerantz securities litigation over STRC disclosures reaches settlement or SEC action. Would show whether preferred-stock marketing claims face material legal or regulatory consequences.

Questions people ask
Is MicroStrategy profitable in 2026?
No. Strategy Inc. posted a Q1 2026 GAAP net loss of $12.8B, driven almost entirely by non-cash Bitcoin fair-value markdowns, despite an operating loss of only $14.5M, as reported 2026-05-04.
Could AI replace MicroStrategy's BI software?
Industry comparisons in July 2026 call Microsoft Power BI's Copilot 'transformative and unmatched' while describing MicroStrategy's own AI as 'narrower and less integrated,' with Power BI bundled free to over 30 million monthly active users.
Is MicroStrategy selling its Bitcoin?
Yes, for the first time since 2022. Strategy sold 32 BTC in late May 2026 and 3,588 BTC in late June/early July 2026 specifically to fund its 11.5% preferred stock dividends, per a 2026-07-20 report.
What is MicroStrategy's biggest competitor?
In software, Microsoft's Power BI, bundled into M365/Fabric with 30M+ users, is squeezing MicroStrategy's flat $477M (2025) BI revenue. In Bitcoin treasury, MicroStrategy still leads 197 public BTC-treasury firms with 843,775 BTC as of 2026-07-19.
Does MSTR stock trade above or below its Bitcoin value?
As of 2026-07-20, MSTR's mNAV (market cap divided by Bitcoin NAV) had fallen to about 1.02x, with market cap near $31.7B against roughly $54.6B in Bitcoin holdings, meaning the once-lucrative premium has largely vanished.

Yes. Rosen Law Firm opened a securities investigation on 2026-06-24 into alleged misleading claims about STRC preferred stock 'guaranteed returns,' alongside a Pomerantz-led 2025 class action over fair-value crypto accounting and Robbins Geller pursuing related claims.
