The call

Milestone's open-platform software still locks in customers Motorola can't easily pry loose, but a vacant CEO seat and NVIDIA dependency are the two things worth watching.

Milestone makes software that ties together security cameras and access control systems from many different manufacturers, and it has built deep relationships with major hardware partners like ASSA ABLOY. This combination is hard for others to copy because Motorola (which owns Avigilon cameras) and Verkada (which makes its own hardware) cannot easily replicate Milestone's open-platform approach without hurting their own equipment sales. However, Milestone is currently stretched thin: it lost its CEO in December 2025, is digesting three recent acquisitions plus a new NVIDIA partnership, and is spending heavily on AI research, which is squeezing profits. The one thing that could tip the balance is whether Milestone finds a strong new CEO quickly and successfully integrates all these new pieces without losing focus or bleeding money.

Why
01
AI pressure: NVIDIA (Cosmos platform, Project Hafnia venture). NVIDIA supplies the AI models Milestone leans on; if NVIDIA sells VMS directly to governments, the partner becomes a rival. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Motorola Solutions (Avigilon). Motorola bundles Avigilon cameras and video software into one public-safety stack, competing for the same government accounts. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Camera-agnostic software that plugs into thousands of devices and access-control systems like Lenel and ASSA ABLOY, something hardware-first rivals can't easily copy.
What would change this call
Whether Milestone names a permanent CEO by end of 2026. Shows if governance drift is resolved or leadership vacuum persists.
Milestone's FY2026 results (due around March 2027) show margin trend. Reveals if heavy AI R&D spend is stabilizing or continuing to erode profit growth.
Whether NVIDIA launches a direct-to-government VMS product. Would show NVIDIA moving from partner to competitor, weakening Milestone's tech moat.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 net revenue $340M, up 10% year over year (2026-03-26)
  • About one third of FY2025 revenue went into AI and cloud R&D (2026-03-26)
  • CEO Thomas Jensen stepped down Dec 1, 2025; still no permanent replacement (2025-12-04)
Named risks
  • CEO succession unresolved since Dec 1, 2025, with only an acting CEO in place as of mid-2026. Severity: high
  • Simultaneous integration of BriefCam, Arcules, brighter AI, and new Hafnia venture strains execution. Severity: medium
  • Deep AI-stack dependency on NVIDIA (Cosmos Reason, Cosmos Curator) for core new features. Severity: medium
  • Margin compression from AI R&D spend (~1/3 of FY2025 revenue) outpacing profit growth. Severity: medium
  • Broader regulatory scrutiny of surveillance-software vendors could reshape procurement rules affecting Milestone. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Who owns Milestone Systems?
Milestone Systems has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Canon Inc. since June 2014, acquired via Canon Europa N.V. Canon reaffirmed commitment by adding two Canon executives to Milestone's board in late 2025, per a December 4, 2025 report.
Is Milestone Systems profitable in 2026?
Milestone reported FY2025 net revenue of about USD 340 million, up 10% year over year, as of March 26, 2026. The company says it reinvested nearly a third of that revenue into AI, cloud, and analytics R&D, which is compressing margins even as revenue grows.
Could AI replace Milestone Systems?
Unlikely soon. Milestone's moat rests on deep camera and device SDK integrations plus entrenched ties to access-control vendors like Lenel and ASSA ABLOY, per a June 13, 2026 comparison. Milestone is building AI itself, via Project Hafnia and a NVIDIA Cosmos Reason based VLM unveiled November 20, 2025, rather than being displaced by it.
Who is Milestone Systems' biggest competitor?
Genetec is consistently named as Milestone's closest peer, with the two historically co-leading a fragmented VMS market where no vendor held above 8% share as far back as 2014-15. Motorola Solutions, which owns Avigilon, is the larger incumbent threat by bundling video into its public-safety stack, per a June 9, 2026 profile.
Is Milestone Systems doing layoffs?
No layoff evidence appears in company statements; Milestone's own press materials state more than 1,500 employees worldwide as of 2025, and the company has been actively acquiring companies (BriefCam, Arcules, brighter AI) rather than cutting staff through that period.
How dependent is Milestone Systems on NVIDIA?
Significantly for its AI roadmap. Project Hafnia, launched March 19, 2025 at NVIDIA GTC, and a Vision-Language Model unveiled November 20, 2025 both run on NVIDIA Cosmos Reason and Cosmos Curator infrastructure, making NVIDIA a core AI partner rather than just a component supplier.
