The call

Modulr sits safely behind its UK license and rails, but growth is slow and crowded, leaving its upside tied to whether the new FIS partnership actually lands.

Modulr is a financial plumbing company that moves money for banks and fintech apps. It holds a real advantage because it has a license from the UK's financial regulator and deep connections to the payment system that startups and AI cannot build overnight, blocking cheaper rivals from stealing its core business. The threat is not that someone will replace it, but that other licensed competitors like ClearBank and Weavr already exist, banks are partnering with those rivals instead, and Modulr's profit margins are razor-thin; the company just turned profitable after ten years, growing at only 10 percent per year. The one thing that could change this is if its new partnership with FIS (a giant US payments company) starting in early 2026 takes off and unlocks US growth, which would matter far more than any AI risk.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI agents move money through Modulr's API rather than replacing it, so automation feeds transaction volume instead of eating it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: ClearBank, Form3, Weavr, and bank-led rivals like Barclays and NatWest partnering with Railsr. Barclays and NatWest are backing rival embedded-finance platforms instead of Modulr, and peers are chasing the same accounting-stack integrations. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. FCA electronic money license plus scheme membership and deep accounting integrations that unlicensed rivals and AI tools cannot copy overnight.
What would change this call
FY2025 audited accounts filed at Companies House confirming or contradicting the profitability claim. Tests whether the Feb 2026 profitability announcement holds up under audit.
US/FIS partnership shows measurable revenue or client volume within 6 months of Jan 2026 launch. Indicates whether Modulr can re-accelerate growth beyond ~10 percent.
A second FCA enforcement action or loss of principal scheme membership. Would signal the regulatory moat is cracking after the 2023 onboarding ban.
Key numbers
  • FY2024 revenue £52.8m, up ~10% YoY (FY2024)
  • First full-year net profit reached in year 10 (Feb 2026)
  • £180bn in annualised payment value processed (Feb 2026)
Named risks
  • Second FCA enforcement action or loss of principal scheme membership after 2023 onboarding ban. Severity: high
  • Crowded peer field (ClearBank, Form3, Weavr, Banking Circle) caps differentiation and pressures thin margins. Severity: medium
  • US expansion via FIS partnership (launched Jan 2026) is unproven and could stall. Severity: medium
  • FY2025 profitability claim is company-announced and not yet confirmed by audited Companies House filing. Severity: medium
  • Big banks partnering with rivals Railsr and Weavr rather than Modulr signals encroachment on core segment. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Modulr profitable in 2026?
Yes. Modulr announced its first full-year net profit for FY2025 on February 5, 2026, coinciding with its 10th year in business and processing £180bn in annualised payment value, per the company's own newsroom statement.
Could AI replace Modulr?
No. Modulr's FCA Electronic Money Institution license and direct scheme membership (Faster Payments, Bacs, CHAPS, Visa/Mastercard) can't be replicated by AI. As of July 2026, third-party tooling lets ChatGPT and Claude agents route payments through Modulr's API rather than bypass it.
Who owns Modulr?
Modulr is privately held and VC-backed with no parent company, per Pitchbook. Investors include General Atlantic (led the $108m Series C, May 2022), PayPal Ventures, Highland Europe, FIS Ventures, Frog Capital, and Blenheim Chalcot.
Who is Modulr's biggest competitor?
Modulr competes in a crowded UK/EU embedded payments field against ClearBank, Form3, Weavr, Railsr, and Banking Circle, per CB Insights (2022) and a November 2025 embedded finance market report, with no single named leader over Modulr.
Did Modulr have regulatory problems?
Yes. The FCA imposed an onboarding restriction on Modulr's new partner/agent clients on October 18, 2023, over Consumer Duty and APP fraud compliance concerns. The restriction was lifted on July 22, 2024, after roughly nine months.
Is Modulr expanding into the US market?
Yes. Modulr entered the US in January 2026 via a partnership with FIS, giving banks access to FedNow, RTP, and ACH through the FIS Money Movement Hub. As of mid-2026 the commercial traction of this US expansion remains unproven.
