The call

Mollie is profitable and licensed with real merchant lock-in, but Stripe is already pushing into its European SMB turf while its own 2021 valuation looks stretched next to the GoCardless deal.

Mollie helps small and medium businesses in Europe accept payments online. It has real advantages that are hard to copy: government licenses, connections to 30+ local payment methods, and 250,000 merchants who use it. However, Stripe is already competing directly in the same market with similar services, and that is a genuine threat, not just theoretical. The big question is whether the company it is buying, GoCardless, will work out smoothly and whether Stripe's push into Europe will slow down Mollie's fast growth.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI mostly helps Mollie cut fraud and support costs rather than threatening its core payment processing business. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Stripe. Stripe actively sells into the same European SMB base Mollie serves, and its scale and product breadth put pressure on Mollie's growth rate. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A Dutch central bank e-money license, 30+ local payment method integrations, and 250,000 merchants already wired into Mollie's checkout.
What would change this call
Mollie's revenue growth rate drops meaningfully below its current 29% pace in 2026 reporting. Would indicate Stripe or others are eroding Mollie's SMB share.
GoCardless deal completes and merchant churn or integration delays are reported through 2H 2026. Would show whether the €1.05B acquisition is strengthening or straining Mollie.
Mollie raises new equity or reports a valuation in a future round or disclosure. Would show whether its ~€3B implied value has reset up or down from the 2021 €5.4B peak.
Key numbers
  • Net revenue before interest hit €147M, up 29% (2025)
  • Over 250,000 merchants across 30+ markets (Nov 2025)
  • 2021 valuation was €5.4B on €665M raised (Jun 2021)
Named risks
  • Stripe's SMB-first scale could erode Mollie's 29% growth rate in core European segment. Severity: high
  • GoCardless integration and regulatory approval still pending as of June 2026. Severity: high
  • Implied valuation drop from EUR5.4B (2021) to ~EUR3B combined (2026) signals equity markdown. Severity: medium
  • Inconsistent self-reported revenue metrics (EUR214M vs EUR147M vs $110.7M ARR estimate) cloud true scale. Severity: low
  • EU PSD3/PSR regulatory transition requires compliance changes through 2026. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Mollie profitable in 2026?
Yes. CEO Koen Koppen said Mollie broke even in March 2024 and has been profitable since. FY2025 net revenue before interest grew 29% to EUR147M with positive operating cash flow and zero debt, per Mollie's own announcement dated 2026-05-20.
Who owns Mollie?
Mollie is privately held, backed by Blackstone Growth, EQT Growth, General Atlantic, HMI Capital, Alkeon Capital and TCV since its EUR665M/$800M Series C in June 2021, which valued the Dutch payments firm at EUR5.4B/$6.5B, its last disclosed valuation.
Could AI replace Mollie?
Unlikely. Mollie holds a Dutch Central Bank (DNB) electronic money institution license and deep local payment-method integrations across 30+ European markets, regulatory and infrastructure moats AI cannot replicate. Mollie itself shipped an AI-agent MCP Server in July 2025 to let AI trigger payment actions.
Who is Mollie's biggest competitor?
Stripe and Adyen. Adyen is largely blocked from SMB pursuit by its enterprise sales motion, but Stripe already runs a global self-serve SMB product with deep European local-payment support, directly contesting Mollie's core segment as of 2025.
Is Mollie laying people off?
No layoffs are reported. Headcount has grown steadily, from about 812 employees in January 2024 to 1,168 by June 2026 per Crustdata, and Mollie is actively expanding into new European markets and business banking.
What is Mollie doing with GoCardless?
In December 2025 Mollie agreed to acquire UK fintech GoCardless for EUR1.05 billion, mostly in stock, creating a combined group valued around EUR3 billion. As of June 2026 Mollie described the deal as still closing, pending regulatory approval.
