The call

SurveyMonkey still has scale and switching costs, but AI chatbots are commoditizing survey creation while Qualtrics presses the enterprise edge and private equity ownership adds its own clock.

SurveyMonkey helps companies create surveys and collect feedback from customers. For years, it was hard to replace because so many big companies used it and switching away was painful. Now artificial intelligence like ChatGPT and Claude can write survey questions and analyze answers just as well, and new AI companies like Perspective AI are building tools that have conversations instead of asking rigid survey questions. The one thing that could save SurveyMonkey is if it turns its huge collection of past survey data into something valuable that AI competitors cannot easily copy, like a database that trains AI to give better answers, but right now it has not done that.

Why
01
AI pressure: Perspective AI, ChatGPT/Claude. Chatbots draft surveys free and Perspective AI swaps static forms for AI conversations, hitting the core product directly. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Qualtrics. Qualtrics keeps pulling ahead in enterprise research budgets while SurveyMonkey defends the small-business and mid-market base. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 250,000+ organizations already embedded via Salesforce, PayPal and WhatsApp integrations, plus 84 million daily response data points.
What would change this call
STG initiates a sale, IPO filing, or dividend recap for SurveyMonkey within 12-24 months. Would show PE owner is exiting rather than investing in long-term competitiveness.
LaunchPad market-research product moves from early access to general commercial availability. Would show SurveyMonkey attempting to move up-market against Qualtrics and research agencies.
A named Fortune 500 client publicly switches survey/research spend to Perspective AI or similar AI-native tool. Would show real enterprise displacement by adaptive AI-moderated competitors.

Questions people ask
Is SurveyMonkey (Momentive) profitable?
As a public company in 2022, Momentive/SurveyMonkey posted $481M revenue but a net loss of $90M. It went private in a ~$1.5B Symphony Technology Group buyout closed May 31, 2023, and has not disclosed profitability figures since.
Who owns SurveyMonkey now?
Private equity firm Symphony Technology Group (STG) owns SurveyMonkey after leading a consortium that acquired Momentive Global for roughly $1.5B ($9.46/share), a deal that closed May 31, 2023, taking the company private.
Could AI like ChatGPT or Claude replace SurveyMonkey?
Core tasks like survey drafting and sentiment analysis are increasingly replicable by general LLMs. SurveyMonkey responded by integrating Claude directly (May 2026) and adding conversational AI chat to its builder (July 2026), but AI-native rivals like Perspective AI already market adaptive conversation over static forms.
Is SurveyMonkey's biggest competitor Qualtrics?
Qualtrics is the enterprise-grade incumbent with a broader research toolkit and panel marketplace that SurveyMonkey doesn't fully match, per a March 2026 competitor analysis. SurveyMonkey instead dominates SMB/mid-market with 250,000+ organizations and 42 million users as of 2025.
Has SurveyMonkey had layoffs?
