The call

MoMo leads Vietnam's wallet market on usage and profitability, with ZaloPay's distribution edge and an ongoing stake sale the two things to watch next.

MoMo lets Vietnamese people and small shops send money, pay bills, and buy things through their phones. The company is hard to replace because it has millions of users, processes the most payments per person, and has government licenses that take years to get. But ZaloPay, which is part of Zalo (a messaging app 100 million people already use), is catching up fast and could steal users by making payments automatic inside the chat app. The company's value has stayed flat for five years, and it may be sold to a private buyer soon instead of going public, so investors may not see big returns even if MoMo stays the leader.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI agent or model replaces a wallet license or merchant network yet; MoMo uses AI internally for fraud checks and personalization. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: ZaloPay (VNG, built on Zalo's 100M+ messaging base). ZaloPay rides Zalo's huge messaging distribution to chase MoMo on wallet usage frequency, with ShopeePay also pushing from e-commerce. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. SBV licensing plus 30M+ users and a two-sided merchant network give MoMo scale rivals still have to match transaction by transaction.
What would change this call
Next Cimigo or Decision Lab survey shows ZaloPay's weekly usage frequency closing on or passing MoMo's. Would show Zalo's messaging distribution is converting into real wallet-usage share loss for MoMo.
Outcome of the Sept 2026 binding-bids process (Blackstone, CVC, MUFG) for a MoMo stake. A completed deal near $2-3B confirms valuation holds; collapse or a lower price signals investor doubt about MoMo's competitive position.
MoMo's reported profitability and user growth in Q2-Q3 2026 results. Sustained profit shows the network moat is holding; margin compression would show ZaloPay/ShopeePay pressure is biting.

  • ZaloPay's Zalo-based distribution could erode MoMo's usage-frequency lead over time. Severity: medium
  • Stake-sale process could collapse with no strategic taker, casting doubt on $2-3B valuation. Severity: medium
  • New biometric KYC mandate (effective Jan 2026) could raise onboarding and compliance costs. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is MoMo profitable in 2026?
Yes. MoMo has been profitable since 2024, according to Reuters sourcing reported by Yahoo Finance on 2026-04-07, making it among the first Vietnamese fintechs to reach full-year profitability while running a 30 million-plus user e-wallet business.
Who owns MoMo?
MoMo is privately held, backed by investors including Mizuho Bank, Ward Ferry, Goodwater Capital and Kora Management from its 2021 Series E. As of 2026-07-06, Blackstone, CVC Capital Partners and MUFG are bidding for a stake, with binding bids due September 2026.
Who is MoMo's biggest competitor?
ZaloPay is MoMo's closest threat, backed by VNG and distributed through Zalo's messaging app with over 100 million users as of 2026-01-06. MoMo still leads on usage frequency per an April 2025 Cimigo survey, but ZaloPay's distribution edge is unmatched.
Could AI replace MoMo?
Unlikely soon. MoMo's core value is licensed payment rails, 140,000-plus merchant acceptance points, and SBV regulatory sandbox access, not something a standalone AI tool replicates. MoMo instead uses AI internally for credit scoring and fraud detection, as documented by NVIDIA in 2022.
Is MoMo planning an IPO?
Not near-term. Reuters reported on 2026-04-07 that a previously discussed 2025 IPO was shelved, with MoMo instead exploring new investors via Jefferies and Morgan Stanley, and by 2026-06-23 investors were weighing a stake purchase of up to 50% at a $3 billion valuation.
How many users does MoMo have?
MoMo reports over 30 million registered users as of 2026-04-07, per Reuters sourcing, and processed roughly 5.5 billion transactions in Q1 2025 alone, according to industry reporting cited by The Investor on 2026-06-23.
