The call

Moon Active still prints real cash off an aging hit while Monopoly Go! eats into it and new titles remain unproven without paid user acquisition.

Moon Active makes Coin Master, a mobile game where players spin slots and build kingdoms. It brought in about $650 million last year, but that's less than half what it made five years ago because Monopoly Go!, made by a rival company called Scopely, copied the formula and took players away. Moon Active has tried to build other games, but none have stuck around; they also laid off a quarter of their staff in a year and a half. The thing that could change everything is if a court rules that Coin Master's spinning mechanics count as illegal gambling aimed at kids, which would force the company to redesign its money-making engine.

Why
01
AI pressure: Moonlake AI and similar generative game-engine platforms. AI game-generation tools could let new rivals clone Coin Master's loop cheaply, but no such product has launched yet. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Scopely (Monopoly Go!). Monopoly Go! pulled players and spend from Coin Master, which fell from about $1.2B to roughly $650M a year. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep player data and social-graph ties keep some Coin Master users spinning, plus cash flow to keep buying users.
What would change this call
Coin Master posts flat or rising revenue for two straight quarters. would show the Monopoly Go! driven decline has stopped.
A Moon Active title besides Coin Master reaches about $100M annualized revenue with retention holding after ad spend stops. would show diversification is working beyond paid installs.
Ruling or settlement in Williams v. Moon Active (N.D. Cal. 4:25-cv-01626-YGR). would show whether Coin Master's spin mechanic faces forced monetization changes.

Questions people ask
Is Moon Active profitable in 2026?
Moon Active does not disclose profit, but self-reported record revenue exceeding $2 billion for full year 2024 (Calcalist, 2025-01-27). Despite that top-line figure, the company ran three rounds of layoffs between January 2025 and mid-2026, suggesting cost pressure even amid strong reported revenue.
Who owns Moon Active?
Moon Active was founded by Samuel Albin in 2011 and remains privately held. Insight Partners bought about 10% for $125 million in early 2020, valuing it at $1.25 billion, then led a $300 million secondary round in November 2021 valuing the company at $5 billion (Wikipedia, 2026-06-27).
Is Moon Active laying off employees?
Yes. Moon Active cut staff in January 2025 (dozens across Lithuania, Poland, Armenia, Ukraine, Turkey, Israel), again in January 2026 (110 employees, including 30 in Israel), and again around June 2026 (about 25 to 30 more), per Globes and GamesIndustry.biz reporting.
Is Coin Master losing to Monopoly Go?
Coin Master has ceded significant ground: Scopely's Monopoly Go! became the fastest mobile game in history to reach $5 billion in gross bookings, per Deconstructor of Fun analysis (2026-02-17), while Playtika's Dice Dreams nearly doubled its monthly revenue after Monopoly Go!'s launch.
Could AI replace Moon Active's core business?
Not directly. Moon Active's moat is proprietary player data and social raid mechanics built over a decade, which generic AI tools cannot instantly replicate. But Nvidia backed Moonlake AI launched a generative game engine in December 2025 that could lower barriers for future coin looter rivals.
Is Moon Active going public with an IPO?
There is no confirmed IPO. One aggregator (startupnationcentral.org, 2026-06-24) called Moon Active 'newly public,' but this conflicts with concurrent Calcalist and Globes reporting describing it as a private unicorn through January 2026; the claim is unverified.
