The call

Mosaic sits on land nobody can replicate but is losing money right now on high input costs and weak Brazil demand, with antitrust litigation adding a separate risk.

Mosaic extracts potash (mainly from Saskatchewan and Florida) and phosphate (mainly from Brazil) and sells them as fertilizer ingredients. These deposits are genuinely hard to replace because potash reserves are geographically scarce and phosphate mines take decades to build, so Nutrien and Morocco's OCP cannot easily duplicate what Mosaic owns. However, the company is losing money right now (Q1 2026 lost $258 million), its costs for sulfur and ammonia are squeezing profits, and demand in Brazil, its biggest market, has collapsed, so its earnings power is severely damaged in 2026. The one thing that matters most: whether Brazilian farmers get access to cheap credit again soon, because if they do, fertilizer demand will bounce back and Mosaic's margins will recover; if credit stays tight, the company could stay unprofitable for years.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Fertilizer comes from mined rock and gas inputs, no software or model can replace a phosphate mine. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Nutrien Ltd. and Morocco's OCP. Nutrien is bigger and more integrated, OCP sits on the world's largest phosphate reserves and undercuts Mosaic on cost. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Owns actual potash and phosphate deposits in Saskatchewan, Florida, and Brazil that took decades to permit and build.
