The call

Muck Rack still owns the journalist relationship layer PR people rely on, but growth has cooled and its bet on AI-visibility products has not yet proven it can replace that as the reason customers stay.

Muck Rack sells software to PR professionals that helps them identify journalists to pitch to and track how often their company appears in news stories and online. The company built a real advantage by asking journalists to voluntarily join its database and by making PR teams' workflows depend on its software, which makes it harder to replace than a simple search tool. But now AI chatbots and newer AI-focused competitor apps are making it easier for anyone to find media contacts and track coverage without Muck Rack, and the company's growth has slowed sharply from very fast to merely moderate. The key question over the next six months is whether Muck Rack's recent shift to focus on measuring how much media attention AI platforms give to a company actually keeps customers buying and spending more, or whether it stays just a side feature that does not change the math.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-native GEO platforms (Profound, AthenaHQ, Otterly, Peec, Daydream) plus LLM-driven media discovery. As people ask ChatGPT instead of Googling, PR teams need to track AI visibility, not just press mentions, and GEO startups are built for exactly that. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Cision (PR Newswire, Brandwatch, HARO legacy). Cision has more scale and legacy accounts but has not shipped a modern journalist database to match Muck Rack's opt-in list. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. An opt-in database of real journalists who keep their own profiles current, plus workflows already wired into ~6,000 customer accounts.
What would change this call
Muck Rack's ARR growth rate reported at or below 15% YoY in a future estimate. Would show deceleration is worsening, not stabilizing.
Cision ships a modernized opt-in journalist database or wins named enterprise logos from Muck Rack. Would show the incumbent counter-product is eroding Muck Rack's core moat.
A GEO platform like Profound or AthenaHQ is publicly named as category leader in AI-visibility measurement. Would show Muck Rack's Generative Pulse failed to become the default before rivals took the category.
Key numbers
  • ARR ~$108M, growth slowed to ~25% YoY (Apr 2026)
  • Web traffic down ~3% QoQ (mid-2026)
  • Growth was 75%+ YoY in 2021 (2022)
Named risks
  • AI-native GEO platforms could win the AI-visibility category before Generative Pulse becomes default. Severity: high
  • Growth deceleration: 25% YoY (2026) vs 75%+ (2021), web traffic down ~3% QoQ mid-2026. Severity: medium
  • Ambiguous 2025 'M&A Offer' event at ~$429M valuation could reshape ownership unexpectedly. Severity: medium
  • Core business relies on public journalist data, exposing it to GDPR/CCPA scraping-related claims. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Muck Rack profitable?
Yes. Muck Rack has described itself as profitable and self-sustaining in company statements accompanying its January 2025 acquisition of Ruepoint, and remains founder-controlled and majority-founder owned despite taking a $180M Series A from Susquehanna Growth Equity in September 2022.
Who owns Muck Rack?
Muck Rack is privately held and founder-controlled. Founders Gregory Galant and Lee Semel bootstrapped it from 2009 to 2022, then took a $180M Series A led by Susquehanna Growth Equity (announced Sept 7, 2022) as a minority investor; founders retained control and no further funding rounds have been disclosed since.
Could AI replace Muck Rack?
Muck Rack's own research found only 2% overlap between journalists PR teams pitch and sources AI models actually cite (March 2026), showing AI is dislocating traditional PR workflows. Muck Rack is responding by launching Generative Pulse (2025), AI Visibility Badges (March 2026), and Curation Engine (April 2026) to reposition around AI-visibility measurement rather than be replaced.
Who is Muck Rack's biggest competitor?
Muck Rack's main incumbent rival is Cision, a PE-owned, debt-laden roll-up that owns PR Newswire and Brandwatch; per Sacra (May 2026), Muck Rack has spent a decade taking share from Cision. Newer threats include AI-native GEO platforms like Profound, AthenaHQ, Otterly, Peec, and Daydream in the AI-visibility category.
What is Muck Rack's revenue or ARR?
Estimates diverge: Sacra pegs ARR at roughly $108M as of April 2026 with about 25% YoY growth, while Latka estimated 2024 revenue at $143.1M (April 2025). Both are third-party estimates since Muck Rack is private and does not disclose audited financials.
Is Muck Rack's growth slowing down?
Yes, signs point to deceleration. The company self-reported 75% YoY revenue growth in 2021, but Sacra estimated growth at about 25% YoY as of April 2026, and Crustdata reported web traffic down roughly 3% quarter-over-quarter and a 'modest growth' score of 33/100 as of July 2026.
