The call

A small team with patented crypto tools is trying to sell agent identity into a market where Okta and Microsoft already ship competing products to the same enterprise buyers.

Multifactor makes software to verify and authorize AI agents (like ChatGPT instances) before they access company data, similar to how companies verify human employees. The problem is that Okta, which already sells identity verification to most big companies, added AI agent verification to their existing product in April 2026, and Microsoft did the same in June 2026. Both arrived three months before this evaluation. Multifactor has patents on some of its security technology, but patents do not stop competitors from shipping a similar product to their existing customers. The one thing that could change this: if Multifactor ships its enterprise plan and developer tools with real, named company logos by end of 2026, it might prove it can win customers before Okta and Microsoft's dominance locks in the market. If no major customers show up publicly, the company's early funding will likely just buy time until the window closes.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google building native agent-identity and permissioning into their orchestration stacks and MCP connectors. If model labs bake identity checks into their own agent platforms, a standalone layer like this becomes an extra step nobody needs to add. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Okta and Microsoft. Okta's agent-identity product went live April 30 2026 and Microsoft's Entra Agent ID shipped guidance in June 2026, both selling the same idea to the same buyers already using their platforms. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Patented cryptographic methods (MFKDF2, Switchboard, Checkpoint) that make credential sharing and revocation work differently than password-vault approaches.
What would change this call
Multifactor publishes verifiable named enterprise logos or revenue figures by Q4 2026. Would show it can win deals despite Okta and Microsoft's bundled agent-identity offerings.
Okta's April 30, 2026 'Okta for AI Agents' GA date holds without rollback or major customer complaints. Confirms Okta's bundled suite is locking in the market Multifactor is trying to enter.
Press or filings report Microsoft Entra Agent ID adoption numbers among enterprise customers in 2026. Would show how fast Microsoft's bundled offering is absorbing the agent-identity category.
Key numbers
  • $15M seed raised (2025-12-04)
  • 1-10 employees (2026-06-30)
  • Okta agent-identity product reached GA (2026-04-30)
Named risks
  • No verified enterprise revenue, customer counts, or named logos as of July 2026; traction claims are vendor-only. Severity: high
  • Okta and Microsoft shipped competing agent-identity products to GA/guidance before Multifactor had an enterprise product live. Severity: high
  • Very small team absorbing a June 2026 acquisition (Keypo) while pivoting positioning from consumer to enterprise. Severity: medium
  • Go-to-market pivot from consumer password manager (Nov 2025) to enterprise AI-agent security (mid-2026) signals unresolved product-market fit. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Multifactor profitable in 2026?
No revenue figures have been disclosed. Multifactor's core account manager is free for consumers, and as of its November 12, 2025 launch, an enterprise plan and developer API were only promised for 'coming months', with no confirmed shipment or paid revenue reported since.
Could AI or incumbents replace Multifactor's product?
Yes, this is a live risk. Okta shipped 'Okta for AI Agents' to general availability by April 30, 2026, and Microsoft published Entra Agent ID guidance in June 2026, both building agent-identity natively into platforms Multifactor's target buyers already use.
Who is Multifactor's biggest competitor?
Okta and Microsoft are the most direct threats: Okta acquired Axiom Security in September 2025 and shipped Okta for AI Agents to GA by April 30, 2026, while Microsoft shipped Entra Agent ID guidance in June 2026, both into Multifactor's target enterprise identity market.
Who owns Multifactor?
Multifactor is a private, venture-backed public benefit corporation. It raised a $15M seed round announced December 4, 2025, led by Nexus Venture Partners, with participation from Y Combinator, Taurus Ventures, Flex Capital, and operator-investors including Gokul Rajaram and Mathilde Collin.
What does Multifactor actually build?
Multifactor builds zero-trust authentication, authorization, and auditing tools for AI agents, centered on 'Checkpoint,' a system that turns online accounts into shareable, revocable links using patented cryptographic primitives called MFKDF2 and Switchboard, launched publicly November 12, 2025.
Has Multifactor made any acquisitions?
Yes. In June 2026, Multifactor acquired Keypo, Inc., a programmable-encryption company, with Keypo's founder Dave Blumenfeld joining Multifactor as a Founding Engineer, its first known acquisition since the company's late-2025 launch.
