The call

MyCase runs a sticky, compliance-anchored business inside a private equity portfolio that is being trimmed while Clio pulls ahead on funding, users, and AI-linked acquisitions.

MyCase makes software that helps law firms manage cases, clients, and money in one place. It is hard to replace because law firms get locked into its workflows and it handles strict money-handling rules, but Clio is much larger, better funded, and growing faster with recent big acquisitions. The company is owned by a private equity firm that appears to be cutting costs rather than investing to compete, so the real question is whether the owners will sell the company soon or try to turn it around.

Why
01
AI pressure: Clio's AI tools plus standalone legal AI like Harvey and EvenUp. AI drafting and research tools threaten to commoditize the per-seat tasks MyCase charges $39 to $89 a month for. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Clio (150K+ users, $5B valuation, $1B vLex acquisition Nov 2025). Clio outspends and out-features MyCase while bundling AI legal research through vLex, and MyCase headcount keeps shrinking. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. IOLTA trust accounting compliance and integrated LawPay payments make firms slow to rip out their case management system.
What would change this call
8am pursues an IPO or sale of MyCase within 12 to 24 months. Would show whether MyCase is being scaled or exited as a PE asset.
MyCase headcount continues declining more than 5% annually through 2026 to 2027. Would confirm consolidation into a commodity product rather than growth investment.
Clio's share of new SMB legal software signups versus MyCase over the next two quarters. Would show whether Clio is extending its lead or MyCase is holding ground.

Questions people ask
Is MyCase profitable in 2026?
No standalone MyCase financials are public in 2026. At the 2022 AffiniPay acquisition, the combined LawPay plus MyCase entity reported over $200 million in annual run-rate revenue, per the June 9, 2022 Businesswire announcement, but no MyCase-specific profit figure has been disclosed since.
Who owns MyCase now?
MyCase is owned by 8am (formerly AffiniPay), which is jointly controlled by TA Associates and Genstar Capital after a July 19, 2024 deal reportedly valuing AffiniPay near $3 billion including debt; Apax Partners, the prior owner, fully exited at that time.
Could AI like ChatGPT replace MyCase?
MyCase's own marketing, published July 14, 2025, admits generic AI writing tools like ChatGPT are viable substitutes for some solo-practitioner drafting tasks. MyCase counters by embedding AI itself: MyCase IQ launched January 23, 2024 using an OpenAI API, later expanded as 8am IQ.
Who is MyCase's biggest competitor?
Clio is MyCase's dominant category rival. Clio raised a $900 million Series F in July 2024 and, on November 1, 2025, acquired legal research platform vLex for $1 billion at a reported $5 billion valuation, far outpacing MyCase's scale.
Is MyCase being sold or merged?
MyCase was rebranded as '8am MyCase' on August 19, 2025 when parent company AffiniPay corporately renamed itself 8am; this was a branding change, not a new sale. Its last ownership change was Genstar Capital's July 2024 investment alongside TA Associates.
What happened when AppFolio owned MyCase?
AppFolio, a public property-management software company, sold MyCase to private equity firm Apax Partners in September 2020 for roughly $193 million, according to MyCase's own September 7, 2020 company announcement.
