Mynaric
German laser satellite-communication terminal maker, now a Rocket Lab subsidiary.
Mynaric's public shareholders were wiped out in 2025, and the surviving business now lives inside Rocket Lab, betting its four-supplier government status outlasts SpaceX's move into outside sales.
Mynaric builds special laser terminals that let satellites talk to each other and to ground stations using light beams instead of radio waves. The company had real advantages: it was one of only four approved suppliers for the U.S. military's Space Development Agency, had over 100 terminals already flying in space, and took years to qualify that competitors cannot easily repeat. However, Mynaric never turned those advantages into steady profits. Revenue projections collapsed from 50 to 70 million euros down to just 14 million euros in 2024, the backlog stopped growing, and the company ran out of money in 2025, forcing shareholders to lose everything when Rocket Lab bought it. Today, Mynaric is no longer a standalone company: if you own Rocket Lab stock (which fell over 50% since the acquisition in mid-2026), you own a piece of Mynaric, but Rocket Lab itself is struggling with delays to its Neutron rocket and is dividing its money across multiple projects. The big wildcard is whether SpaceX's new partnership to sell laser terminals called Plug and Plaser will grab market share from Mynaric, and whether the next round of military satellite contracts will actually fund and accelerate Mynaric's next terminal model.
CONDOR Mk3.1 (100 Gbps) ships on schedule and is adopted in a Tranche 2 contract. Would confirm the moat converts into next-gen revenue under Rocket Lab.
SpaceX/Muon 'Plug and Plaser' secures a third-party satellite laser-terminal supply deal outside Starlink. Would show SpaceX bypassing the SDA vendor list and directly competing for external terminal business.
- Rocket Lab paid $155.3M to acquire Mynaric
- 787 terminal backlog at end of 2024, flat year over year
- 100+ CONDOR Mk3 terminals delivered by mid-2025
- Chronic revenue guidance misses led to 2025 near-insolvency and full shareholder wipeout.
- Parent Rocket Lab's stock down over 50% from May 2026 peak on Neutron rocket delays may curb funding.
- SpaceX/Muon and CACI encroachment into external optical terminal supply narrows Mynaric's moat.
- Integration execution risk scaling production under new Rocket Lab ownership post April 2026.
- Legacy shareholder litigation risk from 2025 StaRUG capital wipeout to zero.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Tesat-Spacecom | contesting | Airbus-affiliated, decades of European Data Relay System heritage, as of Feb 2026 |
| CACI (SA Photonics) | gaining on | CrossBeam terminal has been on orbit since June 2021, ahead of Mynaric flight history |
| SpaceX / Muon | gaining on | Vertically integrates lasers on ~9,000 Starlink satellites, entering external supply via Plug and Plaser, mid-2026 |
| Skyloom | contesting | One of only 4 SDA-approved OISL suppliers alongside Mynaric as of May 2026 |
- Is Mynaric still a publicly traded company?
- No. Mynaric AG became a wholly owned subsidiary of Rocket Lab Corporation on April 14, 2026, in a deal worth $155.3 million in cash plus 2,277,002 Rocket Lab shares. Legacy Mynaric public shareholders were already wiped out in a 2025 German restructuring.
- Did Mynaric go bankrupt?
- Mynaric warned of imminent insolvency in February 2025, took $53 million in bridge loans, and on May 28, 2025 a Munich court confirmed a StaRUG plan forgiving about 105.5 million euros of debt in exchange for full ownership, wiping out public shareholders.
- Who owns Mynaric now?
- Rocket Lab Corporation owns Mynaric AG outright as of April 14, 2026, following completion of a $155.3 million acquisition. Mynaric keeps its Munich headquarters, with German approval requiring IP, production, and R&D to stay in Germany or Europe.
- Is Mynaric profitable?
- No. FY2024 revenue guidance was cut from an initial 50 to 70 million euro target down to a final 14.1 million euros actual, reported January 3, 2025, reflecting chronic execution problems that culminated in a 2025 insolvency restructuring.
- Who are Mynaric's biggest competitors?
- Tesat-Spacecom (Airbus-affiliated), CACI's SA Photonics unit (CrossBeam terminal on orbit since June 2021), and Skyloom are the other three SDA-approved optical terminal suppliers. SpaceX vertically integrates its own laser links across roughly 9,000 Starlink satellites as of mid-2026.
- Could AI replace Mynaric's business?
- Unlikely. Mynaric's value is precision optomechanical and photonic hardware manufacturing plus years of space-qualification flight heritage for satellite laser terminals, a physical production and certification workflow that software based AI cannot directly replicate or shortcut.
